Lamentations 5

YLT 1 Remember, O Jehovah, what hath befallen us, Look attentively, and see our reproach. NIV 1 Remember, O LORD, what has happened to us; look, and see our disgrace. YLT 2 Our inheritance hath been turned to strangers, Our houses to foreigners. NIV 2 Our inheritance has been turned over to aliens, our homes to foreigners. YLT 3 Orphans we have been -- without a father, our mothers [are] as widows. NIV 3 We have become orphans and fatherless, our mothers like widows. YLT 4 Our water for money we have drunk, Our wood for a price doth come. NIV 4 We must buy the water we drink; our wood can be had only at a price. YLT 5 For our neck we have been pursued, We have laboured -- there hath been no rest for us. NIV 5 Those who pursue us are at our heels; we are weary and find no rest. YLT 6 [To] Egypt we have given a hand, [To] Asshur, to be satisfied with bread. NIV 6 We submitted to Egypt and Assyria to get enough bread. YLT 7 Our fathers have sinned -- they are not, We their iniquities have borne. NIV 7 Our fathers sinned and are no more, and we bear their punishment. YLT 8 Servants have ruled over us, A deliverer there is none from their hand. NIV 8 Slaves rule over us, and there is none to free us from their hands. YLT 9 With our lives we bring in our bread, Because of the sword of the wilderness. NIV 9 We get our bread at the risk of our lives because of the sword in the desert. YLT 10 Our skin as an oven hath been burning, Because of the raging of the famine. NIV 10 Our skin is hot as an oven, feverish from hunger. YLT 11 Wives in Zion they have humbled, Virgins -- in cities of Judah. NIV 11 Women have been ravished in Zion, and virgins in the towns of Judah. YLT 12 Princes by their hand have been hanged, The faces of elders have not been honoured. NIV 12 Princes have been hung up by their hands; elders are shown no respect. YLT 13 Young men to grind they have taken, And youths with wood have stumbled. NIV 13 Young men toil at the millstones; boys stagger under loads of wood. YLT 14 The aged from the gate have ceased, Young men from their song. NIV 14 The elders are gone from the city gate; the young men have stopped their music. YLT 15 Ceased hath the joy of our heart, Turned to mourning hath been our dancing. NIV 15 Joy is gone from our hearts; our dancing has turned to mourning. YLT 16 Fallen hath the crown [from] our head, Wo [is] now to us, for we have sinned. NIV 16 The crown has fallen from our head. Woe to us, for we have sinned! YLT 17 For this hath our heart been sick, For these have our eyes been dim. NIV 17 Because of this our hearts are faint, because of these things our eyes grow dim YLT 18 For the mount of Zion -- that is desolate, Foxes have gone up on it. NIV 18 for Mount Zion, which lies desolate, with jackals prowling over it. YLT 19 Thou, O Jehovah, to the age remainest, Thy throne to generation and generation. NIV 19 You, O LORD, reign forever; your throne endures from generation to generation. YLT 20 Why for ever dost Thou forget us? Thou forsakest us for length of days! NIV 20 Why do you always forget us? Why do you forsake us so long? YLT 21 Turn us back, O Jehovah, unto Thee, And we turn back, renew our days as of old. NIV 21 Restore us to yourself, O LORD, that we may return; renew our days as of old YLT 22 For hast Thou utterly rejected us? Thou hast been wroth against us -- exceedingly? NIV 22 unless you have utterly rejected us and are angry with us beyond measure.
