Luke 1

BBE 1 As a number of attempts have been made to put together in order an account of those events which took place among us, NIV 1 Many have undertaken to draw up an account of the things that have been fulfilled among us, BBE 2 As they were handed down to us by those who saw them from the first and were preachers of the word, NIV 2 just as they were handed down to us by those who from the first were eyewitnesses and servants of the word. BBE 3 It seemed good to me, having made observation, with great care, of the direction of events in their order, to put the facts in writing for you, most noble Theophilus; NIV 3 Therefore, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, it seemed good also to me to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, BBE 4 So that you might have certain knowledge of those things about which you were given teaching. NIV 4 so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught. BBE 5 In the days of Herod, king of Judaea, there was a certain priest, by name Zacharias, of the order of Abijah; and he had a wife of the family of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth. NIV 5 In the time of Herod king of Judea there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly division of Abijah; his wife Elizabeth was also a descendant of Aaron. BBE 6 They were upright in the eyes of God, keeping all the rules and orders of God, and doing no wrong. NIV 6 Both of them were upright in the sight of God, observing all the Lord's commandments and regulations blamelessly. BBE 7 And they were without children, because Elisabeth had never given birth, and they were at that time very old. NIV 7 But they had no children, because Elizabeth was barren; and they were both well along in years. BBE 8 Now it came about that in his turn he was acting as priest before God, NIV 8 Once when Zechariah's division was on duty and he was serving as priest before God, BBE 9 And as was the way of the priests, he had to go into the Temple to see to the burning of perfumes. NIV 9 he was chosen by lot, according to the custom of the priesthood, to go into the temple of the Lord and burn incense. BBE 10 And all the people were offering prayers outside, at the time of the burning of perfumes. NIV 10 And when the time for the burning of incense came, all the assembled worshipers were praying outside. BBE 11 And he saw an angel of the Lord in his place on the right side of the altar. NIV 11 Then an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing at the right side of the altar of incense. BBE 12 And Zacharias was troubled when he saw him, and fear came on him. NIV 12 When Zechariah saw him, he was startled and was gripped with fear. BBE 13 But the angel said, Have no fear, Zacharias, for your prayer has come to the ears of God, and your wife Elisabeth will have a son, and his name will be John. NIV 13 But the angel said to him: "Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to give him the name John. BBE 14 And you will be glad and have great delight; and numbers of people will have joy at his birth. NIV 14 He will be a joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice because of his birth, BBE 15 For he will be great in the eyes of the Lord; he will not take wine or strong drink; and he will be full of the Spirit of God from his birth. NIV 15 for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He is never to take wine or other fermented drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even from birth. BBE 16 And through him great numbers of the children of Israel will be turned to the Lord their God. NIV 16 Many of the people of Israel will he bring back to the Lord their God. BBE 17 And he will go before his face in the spirit and power of Elijah, turning the hearts of fathers to their children, and wrongdoers to the way of righteousness; to make ready a people whose hearts have been turned to the Lord. NIV 17 And he will go on before the Lord, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous--to make ready a people prepared for the Lord." BBE 18 And Zacharias said to the angel, How may I be certain of this? For I am an old man, and my wife is far on in years. NIV 18 Zechariah asked the angel, "How can I be sure of this? I am an old man and my wife is well along in years." BBE 19 And the angel, answering, said, I am Gabriel, whose place is before God; I have been sent to say these words to you and to give you this good news. NIV 19 The angel answered, "I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to tell you this good news. BBE 20 Now, see, you will be without voice or language till the day when these things come about, because you had not faith in my words, which will have effect at the right time. NIV 20 And now you will be silent and not able to speak until the day this happens, because you did not believe my words, which will come true at their proper time." BBE 21 And the people were waiting for Zacharias and were surprised because he was in the Temple for such a long time. NIV 21 Meanwhile, the people were waiting for Zechariah and wondering why he stayed so long in the temple. BBE 22 And when he came out he was not able to say anything, and they saw that he had seen a vision in the Temple; and he was making signs to them without words. NIV 22 When he came out, he could not speak to them. They realized he had seen a vision in the temple, for he kept making signs to them but remained unable to speak. BBE 23 And when the days of his work in the Temple were ended, he went back to his house. NIV 23 When his time of service was completed, he returned home. BBE 24 After that time, Elisabeth, being certain that she was to become a mother, kept herself from men's eyes for five months, saying, NIV 24 After this his wife Elizabeth became pregnant and for five months remained in seclusion. BBE 25 The Lord has done this to me, for his eyes were on me, to take away my shame in the eyes of men. NIV 25 "The Lord has done this for me," she said. "In these days he has shown his favor and taken away my disgrace among the people." BBE 26 Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town in Galilee, named Nazareth, NIV 26 In the sixth month, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, BBE 27 To a virgin who was to be married to a man named Joseph, of the family of David; and the name of the virgin was Mary. NIV 27 to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin's name was Mary. BBE 28 And the angel came in to her and said, Peace be with you, to whom special grace has been given; the Lord is with you. NIV 28 The angel went to her and said, "Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you." BBE 29 But she was greatly troubled at his words, and said to herself, What may be the purpose of these words? NIV 29 Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. BBE 30 And the angel said to her, Have no fear, Mary, for you have God's approval. NIV 30 But the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God. BBE 31 And see, you will give birth to a son, and his name will be Jesus. NIV 31 You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. BBE 32 He will be great, and will be named the Son of the Most High: and the Lord God will give him the kingdom of David, his father: NIV 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, BBE 33 He will have rule over the house of Jacob for ever, and of his kingdom there will be no end. NIV 33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end." BBE 34 And Mary said to the angel, How may this be, because I have had no knowledge of a man? NIV 34 "How will this be," Mary asked the angel, "since I am a virgin?" BBE 35 And the angel in answer said to her, The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will come to rest on you, and so that which will come to birth will be named holy, Son of God. NIV 35 The angel answered, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. BBE 36 Even now Elisabeth, who is of your family, is to be a mother, though she is old: and this is the sixth month with her who was without children. NIV 36 Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be barren is in her sixth month. BBE 37 For there is nothing which God is not able to do. NIV 37 For nothing is impossible with God." BBE 38 And Mary said: I am the servant of the Lord; may it be to me as you say. And the angel went away. NIV 38 "I am the Lord's servant," Mary answered. "May it be to me as you have said." Then the angel left her. BBE 39 Then Mary got up and went quickly into the high lands, to a town of Judah; NIV 39 At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea, BBE 40 And went into the house of Zacharias and took Elisabeth in her arms. NIV 40 where she entered Zechariah's home and greeted Elizabeth. BBE 41 And when the voice of Mary came to the ears of Elisabeth, the baby made a sudden move inside her; then Elisabeth was full of the Holy Spirit, NIV 41 When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. BBE 42 And she said with a loud voice: May blessing be on you among women, and a blessing on the child of your body. NIV 42 In a loud voice she exclaimed: "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! BBE 43 How is it that the mother of my Lord comes to me? NIV 43 But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? BBE 44 For, truly, when the sound of your voice came to my ears, the baby in my body made a sudden move for joy. NIV 44 As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. BBE 45 Happy will she be who had faith that the things which the Lord has said to her will be done. NIV 45 Blessed is she who has believed that what the Lord has said to her will be accomplished!" BBE 46 And Mary said: My soul gives glory to God; NIV 46 And Mary said: "My soul glorifies the Lord BBE 47 My spirit is glad in God my Saviour. NIV 47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, BBE 48 For he has had pity on his servant, though she is poor and lowly placed: and from this hour will all generations give witness to the blessing which has come to me. NIV 48 for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed, BBE 49 For he who is strong has done great things for me; and holy is his name. NIV 49 for the Mighty One has done great things for me-- holy is his name. BBE 50 His mercy is for all generations in whom is the fear of him. NIV 50 His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation. BBE 51 With his arm he has done acts of power; he has put to flight those who have pride in their hearts. NIV 51 He has performed mighty deeds with his arm; he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts. BBE 52 He has put down kings from their seats, lifting up on high the men of low degree. NIV 52 He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble. BBE 53 Those who had no food he made full of good things; the men of wealth he sent away with nothing in their hands; NIV 53 He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty. BBE 54 His help he has given to Israel, his servant, so that he might keep in mind his mercy to Abraham and his seed for ever, NIV 54 He has helped his servant Israel, remembering to be merciful BBE 55 As he gave his word to our fathers. NIV 55 to Abraham and his descendants forever, even as he said to our fathers." BBE 56 And Mary was with her for about three months and then went back to her house. NIV 56 Mary stayed with Elizabeth for about three months and then returned home. BBE 57 Now it was time for Elisabeth to give birth, and she had a son. NIV 57 When it was time for Elizabeth to have her baby, she gave birth to a son. BBE 58 And it came to the ears of her neighbours and relations that the Lord had been very good to her, and they took part in her joy. NIV 58 Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown her great mercy, and they shared her joy. BBE 59 And on the eighth day they came to see to the circumcision of the child, and they would have given him the name of Zacharias, his father's name; NIV 59 On the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and they were going to name him after his father Zechariah, BBE 60 But his mother made answer and said, No, his name is John. NIV 60 but his mother spoke up and said, "No! He is to be called John." BBE 61 And they said, Not one of your relations has that name. NIV 61 They said to her, "There is no one among your relatives who has that name." BBE 62 And they made signs to his father, to say what name was to be given to him. NIV 62 Then they made signs to his father, to find out what he would like to name the child. BBE 63 And he sent for writing materials and put down: His name is John; and they were all surprised. NIV 63 He asked for a writing tablet, and to everyone's astonishment he wrote, "His name is John." BBE 64 And straight away his mouth was open and his tongue was free and he gave praise to God. NIV 64 Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue was loosed, and he began to speak, praising God. BBE 65 And fear came on all those who were living round about them: and there was much talk about all these things in all the hill-country of Judaea. NIV 65 The neighbors were all filled with awe, and throughout the hill country of Judea people were talking about all these things. BBE 66 And all who had word of them kept them in their minds and said, What will this child be? For the hand of the Lord was with him. NIV 66 Everyone who heard this wondered about it, asking, "What then is this child going to be?" For the Lord's hand was with him. BBE 67 And his father, Zacharias, was full of the Holy Spirit, and with the voice of a prophet said these words: NIV 67 His father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied: BBE 68 Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel, for he has come to his people and made them free, NIV 68 "Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel, because he has come and has redeemed his people. BBE 69 Lifting up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David, NIV 69 He has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David BBE 70 (As he said, by the mouth of his holy prophets, from the earliest times,) NIV 70 (as he said through his holy prophets of long ago), BBE 71 Salvation from those who are against us, and from the hands of those who have hate for us; NIV 71 salvation from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us-- BBE 72 To do acts of mercy to our fathers and to keep in mind his holy word, NIV 72 to show mercy to our fathers and to remember his holy covenant, BBE 73 The oath which he made to Abraham, our father, NIV 73 the oath he swore to our father Abraham: BBE 74 That we, being made free from the fear of those who are against us, might give him worship, NIV 74 to rescue us from the hand of our enemies, and to enable us to serve him without fear BBE 75 In righteousness and holy living before him all our days. NIV 75 in holiness and righteousness before him all our days. BBE 76 And you, child, will be named the prophet of the Most High: you will go before the face of the Lord, to make ready his ways; NIV 76 And you, my child, will be called a prophet of the Most High; for you will go on before the Lord to prepare the way for him, BBE 77 To give knowledge of salvation to his people, through the forgiveness of sins, NIV 77 to give his people the knowledge of salvation through the forgiveness of their sins, BBE 78 Because of the loving mercies of our God, by which the dawn from heaven has come to us, NIV 78 because of the tender mercy of our God, by which the rising sun will come to us from heaven BBE 79 To give light to those in dark places, and in the shade of death, so that our feet may be guided into the way of peace. NIV 79 to shine on those living in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the path of peace." BBE 80 And the child became tall, and strong in spirit; and he was living in the waste land till the day when he came before the eyes of Israel. NIV 80 And the child grew and became strong in spirit; and he lived in the desert until he appeared publicly to Israel.
