Mark 5:1-20

MSG 1 They arrived on the other side of the sea in the country of the Gerasenes. NIV 1 They went across the lake to the region of the Gerasenes. MSG 2 As Jesus got out of the boat, a madman from the cemetery came up to him. NIV 2 When Jesus got out of the boat, a man with an evil spirit came from the tombs to meet him. MSG 3 He lived there among the tombs and graves. No one could restrain him - he couldn't be chained, couldn't be tied down. NIV 3 This man lived in the tombs, and no one could bind him any more, not even with a chain. MSG 4 He had been tied up many times with chains and ropes, but he broke the chains, snapped the ropes. No one was strong enough to tame him. NIV 4 For he had often been chained hand and foot, but he tore the chains apart and broke the irons on his feet. No one was strong enough to subdue him. MSG 5 Night and day he roamed through the graves and the hills, screaming out and slashing himself with sharp stones. NIV 5 Night and day among the tombs and in the hills he would cry out and cut himself with stones. MSG 6 When he saw Jesus a long way off, he ran and bowed in worship before him - NIV 6 When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and fell on his knees in front of him. MSG 7 then bellowed in protest, "What business do you have, Jesus, Son of the High God, messing with me? I swear to God, don't give me a hard time!" NIV 7 He shouted at the top of his voice, "What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? Swear to God that you won't torture me!" MSG 8 (Jesus had just commanded the tormenting evil spirit, "Out! Get out of the man!") NIV 8 For Jesus had said to him, "Come out of this man, you evil spirit!" MSG 9 Jesus asked him, "Tell me your name." NIV 9 Then Jesus asked him, "What is your name?" "My name is Legion," he replied, "for we are many." MSG 10 Then he desperately begged Jesus not to banish them from the country. NIV 10 And he begged Jesus again and again not to send them out of the area. MSG 11 A large herd of pigs was browsing and rooting on a nearby hill. NIV 11 A large herd of pigs was feeding on the nearby hillside. MSG 12 The demons begged him, "Send us to the pigs so we can live in them." NIV 12 The demons begged Jesus, "Send us among the pigs; allow us to go into them." MSG 13 Jesus gave the order. But it was even worse for the pigs than for the man. Crazed, they stampeded over a cliff into the sea and drowned. NIV 13 He gave them permission, and the evil spirits came out and went into the pigs. The herd, about two thousand in number, rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned. MSG 14 Those tending the pigs, scared to death, bolted and told their story in town and country. Everyone wanted to see what had happened. NIV 14 Those tending the pigs ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, and the people went out to see what had happened. MSG 15 They came up to Jesus and saw the madman sitting there wearing decent clothes and making sense, no longer a walking madhouse of a man. NIV 15 When they came to Jesus, they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons, sitting there, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. MSG 16 Those who had seen it told the others what had happened to the demon-possessed man and the pigs. NIV 16 Those who had seen it told the people what had happened to the demon-possessed man--and told about the pigs as well. MSG 17 At first they were in awe - and then they were upset, upset over the drowned pigs. They demanded that Jesus leave and not come back. NIV 17 Then the people began to plead with Jesus to leave their region. MSG 18 As Jesus was getting into the boat, the demon-delivered man begged to go along, NIV 18 As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed begged to go with him. MSG 19 but he wouldn't let him. Jesus said, "Go home to your own people. Tell them your story - what the Master did, how he had mercy on you." NIV 19 Jesus did not let him, but said, "Go home to your family and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you." MSG 20 The man went back and began to preach in the Ten Towns area about what Jesus had done for him. He was the talk of the town. NIV 20 So the man went away and began to tell in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him. And all the people were amazed.
