Mark 6:30-44

NLT 30 The apostles returned to Jesus from their ministry tour and told him all they had done and what they had taught. NIV 30 The apostles gathered around Jesus and reported to him all they had done and taught. NLT 31 Then Jesus said, "Let's get away from the crowds for a while and rest." There were so many people coming and going that Jesus and his apostles didn't even have time to eat. NIV 31 Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, "Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest." NLT 32 They left by boat for a quieter spot. NIV 32 So they went away by themselves in a boat to a solitary place. NLT 33 But many people saw them leaving, and people from many towns ran ahead along the shore and met them as they landed. NIV 33 But many who saw them leaving recognized them and ran on foot from all the towns and got there ahead of them. NLT 34 A vast crowd was there as he stepped from the boat, and he had compassion on them because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he taught them many things. NIV 34 When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began teaching them many things. NLT 35 Late in the afternoon his disciples came to him and said, "This is a desolate place, and it is getting late. NIV 35 By this time it was late in the day, so his disciples came to him. "This is a remote place," they said, "and it's already very late. NLT 36 Send the crowds away so they can go to the nearby farms and villages and buy themselves some food." NIV 36 Send the people away so they can go to the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat." NLT 37 But Jesus said, "You feed them." "With what?" they asked. "It would take a small fortune to buy food for all this crowd!" NIV 37 But he answered, "You give them something to eat." They said to him, "That would take eight months of a man's wages ! Are we to go and spend that much on bread and give it to them to eat?" NLT 38 "How much food do you have?" he asked. "Go and find out." They came back and reported, "We have five loaves of bread and two fish." NIV 38 "How many loaves do you have?" he asked. "Go and see." When they found out, they said, "Five--and two fish." NLT 39 Then Jesus told the crowd to sit down in groups on the green grass. NIV 39 Then Jesus directed them to have all the people sit down in groups on the green grass. NLT 40 So they sat in groups of fifty or a hundred. NIV 40 So they sat down in groups of hundreds and fifties. NLT 41 Jesus took the five loaves and two fish, looked up toward heaven, and asked God's blessing on the food. Breaking the loaves into pieces, he kept giving the bread and fish to the disciples to give to the people. NIV 41 Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to his disciples to set before the people. He also divided the two fish among them all. NLT 42 They all ate as much as they wanted, NIV 42 They all ate and were satisfied, NLT 43 and they picked up twelve baskets of leftover bread and fish. NIV 43 and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces of bread and fish. NLT 44 Five thousand men had eaten from those five loaves! NIV 44 The number of the men who had eaten was five thousand.
