Matthew 20:17-28

ESV 17 And as Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, he took the twelve disciples aside, and on the way he said to them, MSG 17 Jesus, now well on the way up to Jerusalem, took the Twelve off to the side of the road and said, ESV 18 "See, we are going up to Jerusalem. And the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn him to death MSG 18 "Listen to me carefully. We are on our way up to Jerusalem. When we get there, the Son of Man will be betrayed to the religious leaders and scholars. They will sentence him to death. ESV 19 and deliver him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified, and he will be raised on the third day." MSG 19 They will then hand him over to the Romans for mockery and torture and crucifixion. On the third day he will be raised up alive." ESV 20 Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee came up to him with her sons, and kneeling before him she asked him for something. MSG 20 It was about that time that the mother of the Zebedee brothers came with her two sons and knelt before Jesus with a request. ESV 21 And he said to her, "What do you want?" She said to him, "Say that these two sons of mine are to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your kingdom." MSG 21 "What do you want?" Jesus asked. She said, "Give your word that these two sons of mine will be awarded the highest places of honor in your kingdom, one at your right hand, one at your left hand." ESV 22 Jesus answered, "You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am to drink?" They said to him, "We are able." MSG 22 Jesus responded, "You have no idea what you're asking." And he said to James and John, "Are you capable of drinking the cup that I'm about to drink?" They said, "Sure, why not?" ESV 23 He said to them, "You will drink my cup, but to sit at my right hand and at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father." MSG 23 Jesus said, "Come to think of it, you are going to drink my cup. But as to awarding places of honor, that's not my business. My Father is taking care of that." ESV 24 And when the ten heard it, they were indignant at the two brothers. MSG 24 When the ten others heard about this, they lost their tempers, thoroughly disgusted with the two brothers. ESV 25 But Jesus called them to him and said, "You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. MSG 25 So Jesus got them together to settle things down. He said, "You've observed how godless rulers throw their weight around, how quickly a little power goes to their heads. ESV 26 It shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, MSG 26 It's not going to be that way with you. Whoever wants to be great must become a servant. ESV 27 and whoever would be first among you must be your slave, MSG 27 Whoever wants to be first among you must be your slave. ESV 28 even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." MSG 28 That is what the Son of Man has done: He came to serve, not be served - and then to give away his life in exchange for the many who are held hostage."
