Matthew 22

BBE 1 And Jesus, talking to them again in stories, said: NIV 1 Jesus spoke to them again in parables, saying: BBE 2 The kingdom of heaven is like a certain king, who made a feast when his son was married, NIV 2 "The kingdom of heaven is like a king who prepared a wedding banquet for his son. BBE 3 And sent out his servants to get in the guests to the feast: and they would not come. NIV 3 He sent his servants to those who had been invited to the banquet to tell them to come, but they refused to come. BBE 4 Again he sent out other servants, with orders to say to the guests, See, I have made ready my feast: my oxen and my fat beasts have been put to death, and all things are ready: come to the feast. NIV 4 "Then he sent some more servants and said, 'Tell those who have been invited that I have prepared my dinner: My oxen and fattened cattle have been butchered, and everything is ready. Come to the wedding banquet.' BBE 5 But they gave no attention, and went about their business, one to his farm, another to his trade: NIV 5 "But they paid no attention and went off--one to his field, another to his business. BBE 6 And the rest put violent hands on his servants, and did evil to them, and put them to death. NIV 6 The rest seized his servants, mistreated them and killed them. BBE 7 But the king was angry; and he sent his armies, and those who had put his servants to death he gave to destruction, burning down their town with fire. NIV 7 The king was enraged. He sent his army and destroyed those murderers and burned their city. BBE 8 Then he said to his servants, The feast is ready but the guests were not good enough. NIV 8 "Then he said to his servants, 'The wedding banquet is ready, but those I invited did not deserve to come. BBE 9 Go then to the cross-roads, and get all those whom you see to come to the bride-feast. NIV 9 Go to the street corners and invite to the banquet anyone you find.' BBE 10 And those servants went out into the streets, and got together all those whom they came across, bad and good: and the feast was full of guests. NIV 10 So the servants went out into the streets and gathered all the people they could find, both good and bad, and the wedding hall was filled with guests. BBE 11 But when the king came in to see the guests, he saw there a man who had not on a guest's robe; NIV 11 "But when the king came in to see the guests, he noticed a man there who was not wearing wedding clothes. BBE 12 And he says to him, Friend, how came you in here not having a guest's robe? And he had nothing to say. NIV 12 'Friend,' he asked, 'how did you get in here without wedding clothes?' The man was speechless. BBE 13 Then the king said to the servants, Put cords round his hands and feet and put him out into the dark; there will be weeping and cries of sorrow. NIV 13 "Then the king told the attendants, 'Tie him hand and foot, and throw him outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.' BBE 14 For out of all to whom the good news has come, only a small number will get salvation. NIV 14 "For many are invited, but few are chosen." BBE 15 Then the Pharisees went and had a meeting to see how they might make use of his words to take him. NIV 15 Then the Pharisees went out and laid plans to trap him in his words. BBE 16 And they sent to him their disciples, with the Herodians, saying, Master, we see that you are true, and that you are teaching the true way of God, and have no fear of anyone, because you have no respect for a man's position. NIV 16 They sent their disciples to him along with the Herodians. "Teacher," they said, "we know you are a man of integrity and that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. You aren't swayed by men, because you pay no attention to who they are. BBE 17 Give us, then, your opinion of this: Is it right to give tax to Caesar, or not? NIV 17 Tell us then, what is your opinion? Is it right to pay taxes to Caesar or not?" BBE 18 But Jesus saw their trick and said, Oh false ones, why are you attempting to put me in the wrong? NIV 18 But Jesus, knowing their evil intent, said, "You hypocrites, why are you trying to trap me? BBE 19 Let me see the tax money. And they gave him a penny. NIV 19 Show me the coin used for paying the tax." They brought him a denarius, BBE 20 And he said to them, Whose is this image and name on it? NIV 20 and he asked them, "Whose portrait is this? And whose inscription?" BBE 21 They say to him, Caesar's. Then he said to them, Give to Caesar the things which are Caesar's, and to God the things which are God's. NIV 21 "Caesar's," they replied. Then he said to them, "Give to Caesar what is Caesar's, and to God what is God's." BBE 22 And hearing it, they were full of wonder, and went away from him. NIV 22 When they heard this, they were amazed. So they left him and went away. BBE 23 On the same day there came to him the Sadducees, who say that there is no coming back from the dead: and they put a question to him, saying, NIV 23 That same day the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to him with a question. BBE 24 Master, Moses said, If a man, at the time of his death, has no children, let his brother take his wife, and get a family for his brother; NIV 24 "Teacher," they said, "Moses told us that if a man dies without having children, his brother must marry the widow and have children for him. BBE 25 Now there were among us seven brothers; and the first was married and at his death, having no seed, gave his wife to his brother; NIV 25 Now there were seven brothers among us. The first one married and died, and since he had no children, he left his wife to his brother. BBE 26 In the same way the second and the third, up to the seventh. NIV 26 The same thing happened to the second and third brother, right on down to the seventh. BBE 27 And last of all the woman came to her end. NIV 27 Finally, the woman died. BBE 28 When they come back from the dead, then, whose wife will she be of the seven? because they all had her. NIV 28 Now then, at the resurrection, whose wife will she be of the seven, since all of them were married to her?" BBE 29 But Jesus said to them in answer, You are in error, not having knowledge of the Writings, or of the power of God. NIV 29 Jesus replied, "You are in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God. BBE 30 For when they come back from the dead there are no husbands and wives, but they are as the angels in heaven. NIV 30 At the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven. BBE 31 But about the dead coming back to life, have you no knowledge of what was said to you by God in the Writings: NIV 31 But about the resurrection of the dead--have you not read what God said to you, BBE 32 I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? God is not the God of the dead but of the living. NIV 32 'I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob' ? He is not the God of the dead but of the living." BBE 33 And the people hearing it were surprised at his teaching. NIV 33 When the crowds heard this, they were astonished at his teaching. BBE 34 But the Pharisees, hearing how the mouths of the Sadducees had been stopped, came together; NIV 34 Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together. BBE 35 And one of them, a teacher of the law, put a question to him, testing him, and saying, NIV 35 One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: BBE 36 Master, which is the chief rule in the law? NIV 36 "Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?" BBE 37 And he said to him, Have love for the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. NIV 37 Jesus replied: " 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' BBE 38 This is the first and greatest rule. NIV 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. BBE 39 And a second like it is this, Have love for your neighbour as for yourself. NIV 39 And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' BBE 40 On these two rules all the law and the prophets are based. NIV 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments." BBE 41 Now while the Pharisees were together, Jesus put a question to them, saying, NIV 41 While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, BBE 42 What is your opinion of the Christ? whose son is he? They say to him, The Son of David. NIV 42 "What do you think about the Christ ? Whose son is he?" "The son of David," they replied. BBE 43 He says to them, How then does David in the Spirit give him the name of Lord, saying, NIV 43 He said to them, "How is it then that David, speaking by the Spirit, calls him 'Lord'? For he says, BBE 44 The Lord said to my Lord, Be seated at my right hand, till I put under your feet all those who are against you? NIV 44 " 'The Lord said to my Lord: "Sit at my right hand until I put your enemies under your feet." ' BBE 45 If David then gives him the name of Lord, how is he his son? NIV 45 If then David calls him 'Lord,' how can he be his son?" BBE 46 And no one was able to give him an answer, and so great was their fear of him, that from that day no one put any more questions to him. NIV 46 No one could say a word in reply, and from that day on no one dared to ask him any more questions.
