GW 1 Now listen to what the LORD is saying, "Stand up! Plead your case in front of the mountains, and let the hills listen to your request. NIV 1 Listen to what the LORD says: "Stand up, plead your case before the mountains; let the hills hear what you have to say. GW 2 Listen to the LORD's lawsuit, you mountains. Listen, you strong foundations of the earth. The LORD has filed a lawsuit against his people. He is arguing his case against Israel. NIV 2 Hear, O mountains, the LORD's accusation; listen, you everlasting foundations of the earth. For the LORD has a case against his people; he is lodging a charge against Israel. GW 3 "My people, what have I done to you? How have I tried your patience? Answer me! NIV 3 "My people, what have I done to you? How have I burdened you? Answer me. GW 4 I brought you out of Egypt and freed you from slavery. I sent Moses, Aaron, and Miriam to lead you. NIV 4 I brought you up out of Egypt and redeemed you from the land of slavery. I sent Moses to lead you, also Aaron and Miriam. GW 5 My people, remember what King Balak of Moab planned [to do to you] and how Balaam, son of Beor, responded to him. Remember [your journey] from Shittim to Gilgal so that you may know the victories of the LORD." NIV 5 My people, remember what Balak king of Moab counseled and what Balaam son of Beor answered. Remember [ your journey] from Shittim to Gilgal, that you may know the righteous acts of the LORD." GW 6 What should I bring when I come into the LORD's presence, when I bow in front of the God of heaven? Should I bring him year-old calves as burnt offerings? NIV 6 With what shall I come before the LORD and bow down before the exalted God? Shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves a year old? GW 7 Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams or with endless streams of olive oil? Should I give him my firstborn child because of my rebellious acts? Should I give him my young child for my sin? NIV 7 Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, with ten thousand rivers of oil? Shall I offer my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? GW 8 You mortals, the LORD has told you what is good. This is what the LORD requires from you: to do what is right, to love mercy, and to live humbly with your God. NIV 8 He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. GW 9 The voice of the LORD calls out to the city. (The fear of your name is wisdom.) "Listen, you tribe assembled in the city. NIV 9 Listen! The LORD is calling to the city-- and to fear your name is wisdom-- "Heed the rod and the One who appointed it. GW 10 I have cursed all the wicked people who use their money for evil and use inaccurate weights and measures. NIV 10 Am I still to forget, O wicked house, your ill-gotten treasures and the short ephah, which is accursed? GW 11 I cannot tolerate dishonest scales and bags filled with inaccurate weights. NIV 11 Shall I acquit a man with dishonest scales, with a bag of false weights? GW 12 The rich people in the city are violent. Those who live in the city speak lies, and their tongues speak deceitfully. NIV 12 Her rich men are violent; her people are liars and their tongues speak deceitfully. GW 13 I have begun to strike you with heavy blows and to ruin you because of your sins. NIV 13 Therefore, I have begun to destroy you, to ruin you because of your sins. GW 14 You will eat, but you won't be full. So you will always be hungry. You will put things away, but you won't save them. Anything you save I will destroy. NIV 14 You will eat but not be satisfied; your stomach will still be empty. You will store up but save nothing, because what you save I will give to the sword. GW 15 You will plant, but you won't harvest. You will crush olives, but you won't rub the oil on your skin. You will make new wine, but you won't drink it. NIV 15 You will plant but not harvest; you will press olives but not use the oil on yourselves, you will crush grapes but not drink the wine. GW 16 You have kept Omri's laws and all the practices of the descendants of Ahab, and you have followed their advice. That is why I will ruin you. Your people will be ridiculed. You will bear the disgrace of my people." NIV 16 You have observed the statutes of Omri and all the practices of Ahab's house, and you have followed their traditions. Therefore I will give you over to ruin and your people to derision; you will bear the scorn of the nations. "
