HNV 16 These are the names of the men who Moshe sent to spy out the land. Moshe called Hoshea the son of Nun Yehoshua. NIV 16 These are the names of the men Moses sent to explore the land. (Moses gave Hoshea son of Nun the name Joshua.) HNV 17 Moshe sent them to spy out the land of Kana`an, and said to them, Go up this way by the South, and go up into the hill-country: NIV 17 When Moses sent them to explore Canaan, he said, "Go up through the Negev and on into the hill country. HNV 18 and see the land, what it is; and the people who dwell therein, whether they are strong or weak, whether they are few or many; NIV 18 See what the land is like and whether the people who live there are strong or weak, few or many. HNV 19 and what the land is that they dwell in, whether it is good or bad; and what cities they are that they dwell in, whether in camps, or in strongholds; NIV 19 What kind of land do they live in? Is it good or bad? What kind of towns do they live in? Are they unwalled or fortified? HNV 20 and what the land is, whether it is fat or lean, whether there is wood therein, or not. Be of good courage, and bring of the fruit of the land. Now the time was the time of the first-ripe grapes. NIV 20 How is the soil? Is it fertile or poor? Are there trees on it or not? Do your best to bring back some of the fruit of the land." (It was the season for the first ripe grapes.) HNV 21 So they went up, and spied out the land from the wilderness of Tzin to Rechov, to the entrance of Hamat. NIV 21 So they went up and explored the land from the Desert of Zin as far as Rehob, toward Lebo Hamath. HNV 22 They went up by the South, and came to Hevron; and Achiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the children of `Anak, were there. (Now Hevron was built seven years before Tzo`an in Mitzrayim.) NIV 22 They went up through the Negev and came to Hebron, where Ahiman, Sheshai and Talmai, the descendants of Anak, lived. (Hebron had been built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.) HNV 23 They came to the valley of Eshkol, and cut down from there a branch with one cluster of grapes, and they bore it on a staff between two; [they brought] also of the pomegranates, and of the figs. NIV 23 When they reached the Valley of Eshcol, they cut off a branch bearing a single cluster of grapes. Two of them carried it on a pole between them, along with some pomegranates and figs. HNV 24 That place was called the valley of Eshkol, because of the cluster which the children of Yisra'el cut down from there. NIV 24 That place was called the Valley of Eshcol because of the cluster of grapes the Israelites cut off there. HNV 25 They returned from spying out the land at the end of forty days. NIV 25 At the end of forty days they returned from exploring the land. HNV 26 They went and came to Moshe, and to Aharon, and to all the congregation of the children of Yisra'el, to the wilderness of Paran, to Kadesh; and brought back word to them, and to all the congregation, and shown them the fruit of the land. NIV 26 They came back to Moses and Aaron and the whole Israelite community at Kadesh in the Desert of Paran. There they reported to them and to the whole assembly and showed them the fruit of the land. HNV 27 They told him, and said, We came to the land where you sent us; and surely it flows with milk and honey; and this is the fruit of it. NIV 27 They gave Moses this account: "We went into the land to which you sent us, and it does flow with milk and honey! Here is its fruit. HNV 28 However the people who dwell in the land are strong, and the cities are fortified, [and] very great: and moreover we saw the children of `Anak there. NIV 28 But the people who live there are powerful, and the cities are fortified and very large. We even saw descendants of Anak there. HNV 29 `Amalek dwells in the land of the South: and the Hittite, and the Yevusi, and the Amori, dwell in the hill-country; and the Kana`ani dwells by the sea, and along by the side of the Yarden. NIV 29 The Amalekites live in the Negev; the Hittites, Jebusites and Amorites live in the hill country; and the Canaanites live near the sea and along the Jordan." HNV 30 Kalev stilled the people before Moshe, and said, Let us go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it. NIV 30 Then Caleb silenced the people before Moses and said, "We should go up and take possession of the land, for we can certainly do it." HNV 31 But the men who went up with him said, We aren't able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we. NIV 31 But the men who had gone up with him said, "We can't attack those people; they are stronger than we are." HNV 32 They brought up an evil report of the land which they had spied out to the children of Yisra'el, saying, The land, through which we have gone to spy it out, is a land that eats up the inhabitants of it; and all the people who we saw in it are men of great stature. NIV 32 And they spread among the Israelites a bad report about the land they had explored. They said, "The land we explored devours those living in it. All the people we saw there are of great size. HNV 33 There we saw the Nefilim, the sons of `Anak, who come of the Nefilim: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight. NIV 33 We saw the Nephilim there (the descendants of Anak come from the Nephilim). We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them."
