Proverbs 11

GNT 1 The Lord hates people who use dishonest scales. He is happy with honest weights. NIV 1 The LORD abhors dishonest scales, but accurate weights are his delight. GNT 2 People who are proud will soon be disgraced. It is wiser to be modest. NIV 2 When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom. GNT 3 If you are good, you are guided by honesty. People who can't be trusted are destroyed by their own dishonesty. NIV 3 The integrity of the upright guides them, but the unfaithful are destroyed by their duplicity. GNT 4 Riches will do you no good on the day you face death, but honesty can save your life. NIV 4 Wealth is worthless in the day of wrath, but righteousness delivers from death. GNT 5 Honesty makes a good person's life easier, but the wicked will cause their own downfall. NIV 5 The righteousness of the blameless makes a straight way for them, but the wicked are brought down by their own wickedness. GNT 6 Righteousness rescues those who are honest, but those who can't be trusted are trapped by their own greed. NIV 6 The righteousness of the upright delivers them, but the unfaithful are trapped by evil desires. GNT 7 When the wicked die, their hope dies with them. Confidence placed in riches comes to nothing. NIV 7 When a wicked man dies, his hope perishes; all he expected from his power comes to nothing. GNT 8 The righteous are protected from trouble; it comes to the wicked instead. NIV 8 The righteous man is rescued from trouble, and it comes on the wicked instead. GNT 9 You can be ruined by the talk of godless people, but the wisdom of the righteous can save you. NIV 9 With his mouth the godless destroys his neighbor, but through knowledge the righteous escape. GNT 10 A city is happy when honest people have good fortune, and there are joyful shouts when the wicked die. NIV 10 When the righteous prosper, the city rejoices; when the wicked perish, there are shouts of joy. GNT 11 A city becomes great when the righteous give it their blessing; but a city is brought to ruin by the words of the wicked. NIV 11 Through the blessing of the upright a city is exalted, but by the mouth of the wicked it is destroyed. GNT 12 It is foolish to speak scornfully of others. If you are smart, you will keep quiet. NIV 12 A man who lacks judgment derides his neighbor, but a man of understanding holds his tongue. GNT 13 No one who gossips can be trusted with a secret, but you can put confidence in someone who is trustworthy. NIV 13 A gossip betrays a confidence, but a trustworthy man keeps a secret. GNT 14 A nation will fall if it has no guidance. Many advisers mean security. NIV 14 For lack of guidance a nation falls, but many advisers make victory sure. GNT 15 If you promise to pay a stranger's debt, you will regret it. You are better off if you don't get involved. NIV 15 He who puts up security for another will surely suffer, but whoever refuses to strike hands in pledge is safe. GNT 16 A gracious woman is respected, but a woman without virtue is a disgrace. Lazy people will never have money, but aggressive people will get rich. NIV 16 A kindhearted woman gains respect, but ruthless men gain only wealth. GNT 17 You do yourself a favor when you are kind. If you are cruel, you only hurt yourself. NIV 17 A kind man benefits himself, but a cruel man brings trouble on himself. GNT 18 Wicked people do not really gain anything, but if you do what is right, you are certain to be rewarded. NIV 18 The wicked man earns deceptive wages, but he who sows righteousness reaps a sure reward. GNT 19 Anyone who is determined to do right will live, but anyone who insists on doing wrong will die. NIV 19 The truly righteous man attains life, but he who pursues evil goes to his death. GNT 20 The Lord hates evil-minded people, but loves those who do right. NIV 20 The LORD detests men of perverse heart but he delights in those whose ways are blameless. GNT 21 You can be sure that evil people will be punished, but the righteous will escape. NIV 21 Be sure of this: The wicked will not go unpunished, but those who are righteous will go free. GNT 22 Beauty in a woman without good judgment is like a gold ring in a pig's snout. NIV 22 Like a gold ring in a pig's snout is a beautiful woman who shows no discretion. GNT 23 What good people want always results in good; when the wicked get what they want, everyone is angry. NIV 23 The desire of the righteous ends only in good, but the hope of the wicked only in wrath. GNT 24 Some people spend their money freely and still grow richer. Others are cautious, and yet grow poorer. NIV 24 One man gives freely, yet gains even more; another withholds unduly, but comes to poverty. GNT 25 Be generous, and you will be prosperous. Help others, and you will be helped. NIV 25 A generous man will prosper; he who refreshes others will himself be refreshed. GNT 26 People curse someone who hoards grain, waiting for a higher price, but they praise the one who puts it up for sale. NIV 26 People curse the man who hoards grain, but blessing crowns him who is willing to sell. GNT 27 If your goals are good, you will be respected, but if you are looking for trouble, that is what you will get. NIV 27 He who seeks good finds goodwill, but evil comes to him who searches for it. GNT 28 Those who depend on their wealth will fall like the leaves of autumn, but the righteous will prosper like the leaves of summer. NIV 28 Whoever trusts in his riches will fall, but the righteous will thrive like a green leaf. GNT 29 Those who bring trouble on their families will have nothing at the end. Foolish people will always be servants to the wise. NIV 29 He who brings trouble on his family will inherit only wind, and the fool will be servant to the wise. GNT 30 Righteousness gives life, but violence takes it away. NIV 30 The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, and he who wins souls is wise. GNT 31 Those who are good are rewarded here on earth, so you can be sure that wicked and sinful people will be punished. NIV 31 If the righteous receive their due on earth, how much more the ungodly and the sinner!
