Proverbs 17

CJB 1 Better a dry piece of bread with calm than a house full of food but also full of strife. NIV 1 Better a dry crust with peace and quiet than a house full of feasting, with strife. CJB 2 An intelligent slave will rule a shameful son and share the inheritance with the brothers. NIV 2 A wise servant will rule over a disgraceful son, and will share the inheritance as one of the brothers. CJB 3 The crucible [tests] silver, and the furnace [tests] gold, but the one who tests hearts is ADONAI. NIV 3 The crucible for silver and the furnace for gold, but the LORD tests the heart. CJB 4 An evildoer heeds wicked lips; a liar listens to destructive talk. NIV 4 A wicked man listens to evil lips; a liar pays attention to a malicious tongue. CJB 5 He who mocks the poor insults his maker; he who rejoices at calamity will not go unpunished. NIV 5 He who mocks the poor shows contempt for their Maker; whoever gloats over disaster will not go unpunished. CJB 6 Grandchildren are the crown of the aged, while the glory of children is their ancestors. NIV 6 Children's children are a crown to the aged, and parents are the pride of their children. CJB 7 Fine speech is unbecoming to a boor, and even less lying lips to a leader. NIV 7 Arrogant lips are unsuited to a fool-- how much worse lying lips to a ruler! CJB 8 A bribe works like a charm, in the view of him who gives it -wherever it turns, it succeeds. NIV 8 A bribe is a charm to the one who gives it; wherever he turns, he succeeds. CJB 9 He who conceals an offense promotes love, but he who harps on it can separate even close friends. NIV 9 He who covers over an offense promotes love, but whoever repeats the matter separates close friends. CJB 10 A rebuke makes more impression on a person of understanding than a hundred blows on a fool. NIV 10 A rebuke impresses a man of discernment more than a hundred lashes a fool. CJB 11 An evil person seeks only rebellion, but a cruel messenger will be sent against him. NIV 11 An evil man is bent only on rebellion; a merciless official will be sent against him. CJB 12 Rather meet a bear robbed of its cubs than encounter a fool in his folly. NIV 12 Better to meet a bear robbed of her cubs than a fool in his folly. CJB 13 Evil will not depart from the house of him who returns evil for good. NIV 13 If a man pays back evil for good, evil will never leave his house. CJB 14 Starting a fight is like letting water through [a dike] -better stop the quarrel before it gets worse. NIV 14 Starting a quarrel is like breaching a dam; so drop the matter before a dispute breaks out. CJB 15 He who justifies the wicked and he who condemns the righteous -both alike are an abomination to ADONAI. NIV 15 Acquitting the guilty and condemning the innocent-- the LORD detests them both. CJB 16 Why would a fool wish to pay for wisdom when he has no desire to learn? NIV 16 Of what use is money in the hand of a fool, since he has no desire to get wisdom? CJB 17 A friend shows his friendship at all times -it is for adversity that [such] a brother is born. NIV 17 A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity. CJB 18 He who gives his hand to guarantee a loan for his neighbor lacks good sense. NIV 18 A man lacking in judgment strikes hands in pledge and puts up security for his neighbor. CJB 19 Those who love quarreling love giving offense; those who make their gates tall are courting disaster. NIV 19 He who loves a quarrel loves sin; he who builds a high gate invites destruction. CJB 20 A crooked-hearted person will find nothing good, and the perverse of speech will end in calamity. NIV 20 A man of perverse heart does not prosper; he whose tongue is deceitful falls into trouble. CJB 21 He who fathers a fool does so to his sorrow, and the father of a boor has no joy. NIV 21 To have a fool for a son brings grief; there is no joy for the father of a fool. CJB 22 A happy heart is good medicine, but low spirits sap one's strength. NIV 22 A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones. CJB 23 From under a cloak a bad man takes a bribe to pervert the course of justice. NIV 23 A wicked man accepts a bribe in secret to pervert the course of justice. CJB 24 The discerning person focuses on wisdom there before him, but a fool's eyes wander to the ends of the earth. NIV 24 A discerning man keeps wisdom in view, but a fool's eyes wander to the ends of the earth. CJB 25 A son who is a fool means anger for his father and bitterness for the mother who gave him birth. NIV 25 A foolish son brings grief to his father and bitterness to the one who bore him. CJB 26 To punish the innocent is not right, likewise to flog noble people for their uprightness. NIV 26 It is not good to punish an innocent man, or to flog officials for their integrity. CJB 27 A knowledgeable person controls his tongue; a discerning person controls his temper. NIV 27 A man of knowledge uses words with restraint, and a man of understanding is even-tempered. CJB 28 Even a fool, if he stays silent, is thought wise; he who keeps his mouth shut can pass for smart. NIV 28 Even a fool is thought wise if he keeps silent, and discerning if he holds his tongue.
