Proverbs 1:8-33

NRS 8 Hear, my child, your father's instruction, and do not reject your mother's teaching; NIV 8 Listen, my son, to your father's instruction and do not forsake your mother's teaching. NRS 9 for they are a fair garland for your head, and pendants for your neck. NIV 9 They will be a garland to grace your head and a chain to adorn your neck. NRS 10 My child, if sinners entice you, do not consent. NIV 10 My son, if sinners entice you, do not give in to them. NRS 11 If they say, "Come with us, let us lie in wait for blood; let us wantonly ambush the innocent; NIV 11 If they say, "Come along with us; let's lie in wait for someone's blood, let's waylay some harmless soul; NRS 12 like Sheol let us swallow them alive and whole, like those who go down to the Pit. NIV 12 let's swallow them alive, like the grave, and whole, like those who go down to the pit; NRS 13 We shall find all kinds of costly things; we shall fill our houses with booty. NIV 13 we will get all sorts of valuable things and fill our houses with plunder; NRS 14 Throw in your lot among us; we will all have one purse"— NIV 14 throw in your lot with us, and we will share a common purse"-- NRS 15 my child, do not walk in their way, keep your foot from their paths; NIV 15 my son, do not go along with them, do not set foot on their paths; NRS 16 for their feet run to evil, and they hurry to shed blood. NIV 16 for their feet rush into sin, they are swift to shed blood. NRS 17 For in vain is the net baited while the bird is looking on; NIV 17 How useless to spread a net in full view of all the birds! NRS 18 yet they lie in wait—to kill themselves! and set an ambush—for their own lives! NIV 18 These men lie in wait for their own blood; they waylay only themselves! NRS 19 Such is the end of all who are greedy for gain; it takes away the life of its possessors. NIV 19 Such is the end of all who go after ill-gotten gain; it takes away the lives of those who get it. NRS 20 Wisdom cries out in the street; in the squares she raises her voice. NIV 20 Wisdom calls aloud in the street, she raises her voice in the public squares; NRS 21 At the busiest corner she cries out; at the entrance of the city gates she speaks: NIV 21 at the head of the noisy streets she cries out, in the gateways of the city she makes her speech: NRS 22 "How long, O simple ones, will you love being simple? How long will scoffers delight in their scoffing and fools hate knowledge? NIV 22 "How long will you simple ones love your simple ways? How long will mockers delight in mockery and fools hate knowledge? NRS 23 Give heed to my reproof; I will pour out my thoughts to you; I will make my words known to you. NIV 23 If you had responded to my rebuke, I would have poured out my heart to you and made my thoughts known to you. NRS 24 Because I have called and you refused, have stretched out my hand and no one heeded, NIV 24 But since you rejected me when I called and no one gave heed when I stretched out my hand, NRS 25 and because you have ignored all my counsel and would have none of my reproof, NIV 25 since you ignored all my advice and would not accept my rebuke, NRS 26 I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when panic strikes you, NIV 26 I in turn will laugh at your disaster; I will mock when calamity overtakes you-- NRS 27 when panic strikes you like a storm, and your calamity comes like a whirlwind, when distress and anguish come upon you. NIV 27 when calamity overtakes you like a storm, when disaster sweeps over you like a whirlwind, when distress and trouble overwhelm you. NRS 28 Then they will call upon me, but I will not answer; they will seek me diligently, but will not find me. NIV 28 "Then they will call to me but I will not answer; they will look for me but will not find me. NRS 29 Because they hated knowledge and did not choose the fear of the Lord, NIV 29 Since they hated knowledge and did not choose to fear the LORD, NRS 30 would have none of my counsel, and despised all my reproof, NIV 30 since they would not accept my advice and spurned my rebuke, NRS 31 therefore they shall eat the fruit of their way and be sated with their own devices. NIV 31 they will eat the fruit of their ways and be filled with the fruit of their schemes. NRS 32 For waywardness kills the simple, and the complacency of fools destroys them; NIV 32 For the waywardness of the simple will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them; NRS 33 but those who listen to me will be secure and will live at ease, without dread of disaster." NIV 33 but whoever listens to me will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm."
