Proverbs 24

NKJV 1 Do not be envious of evil men, Nor desire to be with them; NIV 1 Do not envy wicked men, do not desire their company; NKJV 2 For their heart devises violence, And their lips talk of troublemaking. NIV 2 for their hearts plot violence, and their lips talk about making trouble. NKJV 3 Through wisdom a house is built, And by understanding it is established; NIV 3 By wisdom a house is built, and through understanding it is established; NKJV 4 By knowledge the rooms are filled With all precious and pleasant riches. NIV 4 through knowledge its rooms are filled with rare and beautiful treasures. NKJV 5 A wise man is strong, Yes, a man of knowledge increases strength; NIV 5 A wise man has great power, and a man of knowledge increases strength; NKJV 6 For by wise counsel you will wage your own war, And in a multitude of counselors there is safety. NIV 6 for waging war you need guidance, and for victory many advisers. NKJV 7 Wisdom is too lofty for a fool; He does not open his mouth in the gate. NIV 7 Wisdom is too high for a fool; in the assembly at the gate he has nothing to say. NKJV 8 He who plots to do evil Will be called a schemer. NIV 8 He who plots evil will be known as a schemer. NKJV 9 The devising of foolishness is sin, And the scoffer is an abomination to men. NIV 9 The schemes of folly are sin, and men detest a mocker. NKJV 10 If you faint in the day of adversity, Your strength is small. NIV 10 If you falter in times of trouble, how small is your strength! NKJV 11 Deliver those who are drawn toward death, And hold back those stumbling to the slaughter. NIV 11 Rescue those being led away to death; hold back those staggering toward slaughter. NKJV 12 If you say, "Surely we did not know this," Does not He who weighs the hearts consider it? He who keeps your soul, does He not know it? And will He not render to each man according to his deeds? NIV 12 If you say, "But we knew nothing about this," does not he who weighs the heart perceive it? Does not he who guards your life know it? Will he not repay each person according to what he has done? NKJV 13 My son, eat honey because it is good, And the honeycomb which is sweet to your taste; NIV 13 Eat honey, my son, for it is good; honey from the comb is sweet to your taste. NKJV 14 So shall the knowledge of wisdom be to your soul; If you have found it, there is a prospect, And your hope will not be cut off. NIV 14 Know also that wisdom is sweet to your soul; if you find it, there is a future hope for you, and your hope will not be cut off. NKJV 15 Do not lie in wait, O wicked man, against the dwelling of the righteous; Do not plunder his resting place; NIV 15 Do not lie in wait like an outlaw against a righteous man's house, do not raid his dwelling place; NKJV 16 For a righteous man may fall seven times And rise again, But the wicked shall fall by calamity. NIV 16 for though a righteous man falls seven times, he rises again, but the wicked are brought down by calamity. NKJV 17 Do not rejoice when your enemy falls, And do not let your heart be glad when he stumbles; NIV 17 Do not gloat when your enemy falls; when he stumbles, do not let your heart rejoice, NKJV 18 Lest the Lord see it, and it displease Him, And He turn away His wrath from him. NIV 18 or the LORD will see and disapprove and turn his wrath away from him. NKJV 19 Do not fret because of evildoers, Nor be envious of the wicked; NIV 19 Do not fret because of evil men or be envious of the wicked, NKJV 20 For there will be no prospect for the evil man; The lamp of the wicked will be put out. NIV 20 for the evil man has no future hope, and the lamp of the wicked will be snuffed out. NKJV 21 My son, fear the Lord and the king; Do not associate with those given to change; NIV 21 Fear the LORD and the king, my son, and do not join with the rebellious, NKJV 22 For their calamity will rise suddenly, And who knows the ruin those two can bring? NIV 22 for those two will send sudden destruction upon them, and who knows what calamities they can bring? NKJV 23 These things also belong to the wise: It is not good to show partiality in judgment. NIV 23 These also are sayings of the wise: To show partiality in judging is not good: NKJV 24 He who says to the wicked, "You are righteous," Him the people will curse; Nations will abhor him. NIV 24 Whoever says to the guilty, "You are innocent"-- peoples will curse him and nations denounce him. NKJV 25 But those who rebuke the wicked will have delight, And a good blessing will come upon them. NIV 25 But it will go well with those who convict the guilty, and rich blessing will come upon them. NKJV 26 He who gives a right answer kisses the lips. NIV 26 An honest answer is like a kiss on the lips. NKJV 27 Prepare your outside work, Make it fit for yourself in the field; And afterward build your house. NIV 27 Finish your outdoor work and get your fields ready; after that, build your house. NKJV 28 Do not be a witness against your neighbor without cause, For would you deceive with your lips? NIV 28 Do not testify against your neighbor without cause, or use your lips to deceive. NKJV 29 Do not say, "I will do to him just as he has done to me; I will render to the man according to his work." NIV 29 Do not say, "I'll do to him as he has done to me; I'll pay that man back for what he did." NKJV 30 I went by the field of the lazy man, And by the vineyard of the man devoid of understanding; NIV 30 I went past the field of the sluggard, past the vineyard of the man who lacks judgment; NKJV 31 And there it was, all overgrown with thorns; Its surface was covered with nettles; Its stone wall was broken down. NIV 31 thorns had come up everywhere, the ground was covered with weeds, and the stone wall was in ruins. NKJV 32 When I saw it, I considered it well; I looked on it and received instruction: NIV 32 I applied my heart to what I observed and learned a lesson from what I saw: NKJV 33 A little sleep, a little slumber, A little folding of the hands to rest; NIV 33 A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest-- NKJV 34 So shall your poverty come like a prowler, And your need like an armed man. NIV 34 and poverty will come on you like a bandit and scarcity like an armed man.
