Proverbs 5

NKJV 1 My son, pay attention to my wisdom; Lend your ear to my understanding, NIV 1 My son, pay attention to my wisdom, listen well to my words of insight, NKJV 2 That you may preserve discretion, And your lips may keep knowledge. NIV 2 that you may maintain discretion and your lips may preserve knowledge. NKJV 3 For the lips of an immoral woman drip honey, And her mouth is smoother than oil; NIV 3 For the lips of an adulteress drip honey, and her speech is smoother than oil; NKJV 4 But in the end she is bitter as wormwood, Sharp as a two-edged sword. NIV 4 but in the end she is bitter as gall, sharp as a double-edged sword. NKJV 5 Her feet go down to death, Her steps lay hold of hell. NIV 5 Her feet go down to death; her steps lead straight to the grave. NKJV 6 Lest you ponder her path of life-- Her ways are unstable; You do not know them. NIV 6 She gives no thought to the way of life; her paths are crooked, but she knows it not. NKJV 7 Therefore hear me now, my children, And do not depart from the words of my mouth. NIV 7 Now then, my sons, listen to me; do not turn aside from what I say. NKJV 8 Remove your way far from her, And do not go near the door of her house, NIV 8 Keep to a path far from her, do not go near the door of her house, NKJV 9 Lest you give your honor to others, And your years to the cruel one; NIV 9 lest you give your best strength to others and your years to one who is cruel, NKJV 10 Lest aliens be filled with your wealth, And your labors go to the house of a foreigner; NIV 10 lest strangers feast on your wealth and your toil enrich another man's house. NKJV 11 And you mourn at last, When your flesh and your body are consumed, NIV 11 At the end of your life you will groan, when your flesh and body are spent. NKJV 12 And say: "How I have hated instruction, And my heart despised correction! NIV 12 You will say, "How I hated discipline! How my heart spurned correction! NKJV 13 I have not obeyed the voice of my teachers, Nor inclined my ear to those who instructed me! NIV 13 I would not obey my teachers or listen to my instructors. NKJV 14 I was on the verge of total ruin, In the midst of the assembly and congregation." NIV 14 I have come to the brink of utter ruin in the midst of the whole assembly." NKJV 15 Drink water from your own cistern, And running water from your own well. NIV 15 Drink water from your own cistern, running water from your own well. NKJV 16 Should your fountains be dispersed abroad, Streams of water in the streets? NIV 16 Should your springs overflow in the streets, your streams of water in the public squares? NKJV 17 Let them be only your own, And not for strangers with you. NIV 17 Let them be yours alone, never to be shared with strangers. NKJV 18 Let your fountain be blessed, And rejoice with the wife of your youth. NIV 18 May your fountain be blessed, and may you rejoice in the wife of your youth. NKJV 19 As a loving deer and a graceful doe, Let her breasts satisfy you at all times; And always be enraptured with her love. NIV 19 A loving doe, a graceful deer-- may her breasts satisfy you always, may you ever be captivated by her love. NKJV 20 For why should you, my son, be enraptured by an immoral woman, And be embraced in the arms of a seductress? NIV 20 Why be captivated, my son, by an adulteress? Why embrace the bosom of another man's wife? NKJV 21 For the ways of man are before the eyes of the Lord, And He ponders all his paths. NIV 21 For a man's ways are in full view of the LORD, and he examines all his paths. NKJV 22 His own iniquities entrap the wicked man, And he is caught in the cords of his sin. NIV 22 The evil deeds of a wicked man ensnare him; the cords of his sin hold him fast. NKJV 23 He shall die for lack of instruction, And in the greatness of his folly he shall go astray. NIV 23 He will die for lack of discipline, led astray by his own great folly.
