Proverbs 6

ASV 1 My son, if thou art become surety for thy neighbor, If thou hast stricken thy hands for a stranger; NIV 1 My son, if you have put up security for your neighbor, if you have struck hands in pledge for another, ASV 2 Thou art snared with the words of thy mouth, Thou art taken with the words of thy mouth. NIV 2 if you have been trapped by what you said, ensnared by the words of your mouth, ASV 3 Do this now, my son, and deliver thyself, Seeing thou art come into the hand of thy neighbor: Go, humble thyself, and importune thy neighbor; NIV 3 then do this, my son, to free yourself, since you have fallen into your neighbor's hands: Go and humble yourself; press your plea with your neighbor! ASV 4 Give not sleep to thine eyes, Nor slumber to thine eyelids; NIV 4 Allow no sleep to your eyes, no slumber to your eyelids. ASV 5 Deliver thyself as a roe from the hand [of the hunter], And as a bird from the hand of the fowler. NIV 5 Free yourself, like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter, like a bird from the snare of the fowler. ASV 6 Go to the ant, thou sluggard; Consider her ways, and be wise: NIV 6 Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise! ASV 7 Which having no chief, Overseer, or ruler, NIV 7 It has no commander, no overseer or ruler, ASV 8 Provideth her bread in the summer, And gathereth her food in the harvest. NIV 8 yet it stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest. ASV 9 How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? When wilt thou arise out of thy sleep? NIV 9 How long will you lie there, you sluggard? When will you get up from your sleep? ASV 10 [Yet] a little sleep, a little slumber, A little folding of the hands to sleep: NIV 10 A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest-- ASV 11 So shall thy poverty come as a robber, And thy want as an armed man. NIV 11 and poverty will come on you like a bandit and scarcity like an armed man. ASV 12 A worthless person, a man of iniquity, Is he that walketh with a perverse mouth; NIV 12 A scoundrel and villain, who goes about with a corrupt mouth, ASV 13 That winketh with his eyes, that speaketh with his feet, That maketh signs with his fingers; NIV 13 who winks with his eye, signals with his feet and motions with his fingers, ASV 14 In whose heart is perverseness, Who deviseth evil continually, Who soweth discord. NIV 14 who plots evil with deceit in his heart-- he always stirs up dissension. ASV 15 Therefore shall his calamity come suddenly; On a sudden shall he be broken, and that without remedy. NIV 15 Therefore disaster will overtake him in an instant; he will suddenly be destroyed--without remedy. ASV 16 There are six things which Jehovah hateth; Yea, seven which are an abomination unto him: NIV 16 There are six things the LORD hates, seven that are detestable to him: ASV 17 Haughty eyes, a lying tongue, And hands that shed innocent blood; NIV 17 haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, ASV 18 A heart that deviseth wicked purposes, Feet that are swift in running to mischief, NIV 18 a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, ASV 19 A false witness that uttereth lies, And he that soweth discord among brethren. NIV 19 a false witness who pours out lies and a man who stirs up dissension among brothers. ASV 20 My son, keep the commandment of thy father, And forsake not the law of thy mother: NIV 20 My son, keep your father's commands and do not forsake your mother's teaching. ASV 21 Bind them continually upon thy heart; Tie them about thy neck. NIV 21 Bind them upon your heart forever; fasten them around your neck. ASV 22 When thou walkest, it shall lead thee; When thou sleepest, it shall watch over thee; And when thou awakest, it shall talk with thee. NIV 22 When you walk, they will guide you; when you sleep, they will watch over you; when you awake, they will speak to you. ASV 23 For the commandment is a lamp; And the law is light; And reproofs of instruction are the way of life: NIV 23 For these commands are a lamp, this teaching is a light, and the corrections of discipline are the way to life, ASV 24 To keep thee from the evil woman, From the flattery of the foreigner's tongue. NIV 24 keeping you from the immoral woman, from the smooth tongue of the wayward wife. ASV 25 Lust not after her beauty in thy heart; Neither let her take thee with her eyelids. NIV 25 Do not lust in your heart after her beauty or let her captivate you with her eyes, ASV 26 For on account of a harlot [a man is brought] to a piece of bread; And the adulteress hunteth for the precious life. NIV 26 for the prostitute reduces you to a loaf of bread, and the adulteress preys upon your very life. ASV 27 Can a man take fire in his bosom, And his clothes not be burned? NIV 27 Can a man scoop fire into his lap without his clothes being burned? ASV 28 Or can one walk upon hot coals, And his feet not be scorched? NIV 28 Can a man walk on hot coals without his feet being scorched? ASV 29 So he that goeth in to his neighbor's wife; Whosoever toucheth her shall not be unpunished. NIV 29 So is he who sleeps with another man's wife; no one who touches her will go unpunished. ASV 30 Men do not despise a thief, if he steal To satisfy himself when he is hungry: NIV 30 Men do not despise a thief if he steals to satisfy his hunger when he is starving. ASV 31 But if he be found, he shall restore sevenfold; He shall give all the substance of his house. NIV 31 Yet if he is caught, he must pay sevenfold, though it costs him all the wealth of his house. ASV 32 He that committeth adultery with a woman is void of understanding: He doeth it who would destroy his own soul. NIV 32 But a man who commits adultery lacks judgment; whoever does so destroys himself. ASV 33 Wounds and dishonor shall he get; And his reproach shall not be wiped away. NIV 33 Blows and disgrace are his lot, and his shame will never be wiped away; ASV 34 For jealousy is the rage of a man; And he will not spare in the day of vengeance. NIV 34 for jealousy arouses a husband's fury, and he will show no mercy when he takes revenge. ASV 35 He will not regard any ransom; Neither will he rest content, though thou givest many gifts. NIV 35 He will not accept any compensation; he will refuse the bribe, however great it is.
