Psalm 10

CEB 1 Why do you stand so far away, LORD, hiding yourself in troubling times? NIV 1 Why, O LORD, do you stand far off ? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble? CEB 2 Meanwhile, the wicked are proudly in hot pursuit of those who suffer. Let them get caught in the very same schemes they've thought up! NIV 2 In his arrogance the wicked man hunts down the weak, who are caught in the schemes he devises. CEB 3 The wicked brag about their body's cravings; the greedy reject the LORD, cursing. NIV 3 He boasts of the cravings of his heart; he blesses the greedy and reviles the LORD. CEB 4 At the peak of their wrath, the wicked don't seek God: There's no God— that's what they are always thinking. NIV 4 In his pride the wicked does not seek him; in all his thoughts there is no room for God. CEB 5 Their ways are always twisted. Your rules are too lofty for them. They snort at all their foes. NIV 5 His ways are always prosperous; he is haughty and your laws are far from him; he sneers at all his enemies. CEB 6 They think to themselves, We'll never stumble. We'll never encounter any resistance. NIV 6 He says to himself, "Nothing will shake me; I'll always be happy and never have trouble." CEB 7 Their mouths are filled with curses, dishonesty, violence. Under their tongues lie troublemaking and wrongdoing. NIV 7 His mouth is full of curses and lies and threats; trouble and evil are under his tongue. CEB 8 They wait in a place perfect for ambush; from their hiding places they kill innocent people; their eyes spot those who are helpless. NIV 8 He lies in wait near the villages; from ambush he murders the innocent, watching in secret for his victims. CEB 9 They lie in ambush in secret places, like a lion in its lair. They lie in ambush so they can seize those who suffer! They seize the poor, all right, dragging them off in their nets. NIV 9 He lies in wait like a lion in cover; he lies in wait to catch the helpless; he catches the helpless and drags them off in his net. CEB 10 Their helpless victims are crushed; they collapse, falling prey to the strength of the wicked. NIV 10 His victims are crushed, they collapse; they fall under his strength. CEB 11 The wicked think to themselves: God has forgotten. God has hidden his face. God never sees anything! NIV 11 He says to himself, "God has forgotten; he covers his face and never sees." CEB 12 Get up, LORD! Get your fist ready, God! Don't forget the ones who suffer! NIV 12 Arise, LORD! Lift up your hand, O God. Do not forget the helpless. CEB 13 Why do the wicked reject God? Why do they think to themselves that you won't find out? NIV 13 Why does the wicked man revile God? Why does he say to himself, "He won't call me to account"? CEB 14 But you do see! You do see troublemaking and grief, and you do something about it! The helpless leave it all to you. You are the orphan's helper. NIV 14 But you, O God, do see trouble and grief; you consider it to take it in hand. The victim commits himself to you; you are the helper of the fatherless. CEB 15 Break the arms of those who are wicked and evil. Seek out their wickedness until there's no more to find. NIV 15 Break the arm of the wicked and evil man; call him to account for his wickedness that would not be found out. CEB 16 The LORD rules forever and always! The nations will vanish from his land. NIV 16 The LORD is King for ever and ever; the nations will perish from his land. CEB 17 LORD, you listen to the desires of those who suffer. You steady their hearts; you listen closely to them, NIV 17 You hear, O LORD, the desire of the afflicted; you encourage them, and you listen to their cry, CEB 18 to establish justice for the orphan and the oppressed, so that people of the land will never again be terrified. NIV 18 defending the fatherless and the oppressed, in order that man, who is of the earth, may terrify no more.
