Psalm 109

LEB 1 O God of my praise, do not keep silent, NIV 1 O God, whom I praise, do not remain silent, LEB 2 for {wicked and deceitful mouths} have opened against me. They speak to me with a lying tongue. NIV 2 for wicked and deceitful men have opened their mouths against me; they have spoken against me with lying tongues. LEB 3 They also surround me with words of hate, and fight me without cause. NIV 3 With words of hatred they surround me; they attack me without cause. LEB 4 In return for my love they accuse me, though I [am in] prayer. NIV 4 In return for my friendship they accuse me, but I am a man of prayer. LEB 5 So they inflicted evil against me in return for good and hatred in return for my love. NIV 5 They repay me evil for good, and hatred for my friendship. LEB 6 Appoint over him a wicked [man], and let an accuser stand at his right [hand]. NIV 6 Appoint an evil man to oppose him; let an accuser stand at his right hand. LEB 7 When he is judged, let him come out guilty, and let his prayer become as sin. NIV 7 When he is tried, let him be found guilty, and may his prayers condemn him. LEB 8 Let his days be few; let another take his office. NIV 8 May his days be few; may another take his place of leadership. LEB 9 Let his children be orphans, and his wife a widow, NIV 9 May his children be fatherless and his wife a widow. LEB 10 and let his children wander aimlessly and beg, and let them plead from their ruins. NIV 10 May his children be wandering beggars; may they be driven from their ruined homes. LEB 11 Let [the] creditor seize all that [is] his, and let strangers plunder his property. NIV 11 May a creditor seize all he has; may strangers plunder the fruits of his labor. LEB 12 Let there be none [who] extend to him loyal love, nor any who pities his orphans. NIV 12 May no one extend kindness to him or take pity on his fatherless children. LEB 13 Let his descendants be cut off. Let their name be blotted out in [the] next generation. NIV 13 May his descendants be cut off, their names blotted out from the next generation. LEB 14 Let the iniquity of his ancestors be remembered before Yahweh, and let the sin of his mother not be blotted out. NIV 14 May the iniquity of his fathers be remembered before the LORD; may the sin of his mother never be blotted out. LEB 15 Let them be before Yahweh continually, that he may cut off their memory from [the] earth, NIV 15 May their sins always remain before the LORD, that he may cut off the memory of them from the earth. LEB 16 because he did not remember to show loyal love, but he pursued anyone, poor or needy or brokenhearted, to slay [them]. NIV 16 For he never thought of doing a kindness, but hounded to death the poor and the needy and the brokenhearted. LEB 17 Because he loved cursing, let it come [upon] him. Because he did not delight in blessing, let it be far from him. NIV 17 He loved to pronounce a curse-- may it come on him; he found no pleasure in blessing-- may it be far from him. LEB 18 Because he wore a curse as his robe, let it enter {his body} like water, and into his bones like oil. NIV 18 He wore cursing as his garment; it entered into his body like water, into his bones like oil. LEB 19 May it be for him like a garment [in which] he wraps, and a belt {he continually wears}. NIV 19 May it be like a cloak wrapped about him, like a belt tied forever around him. LEB 20 Let this [be] the punishment for my accusers from Yahweh, even those who speak evil against my life. NIV 20 May this be the LORD's payment to my accusers, to those who speak evil of me. LEB 21 But you, O Yahweh my Lord, deal with me for your name's sake. Because your loyal love [is] good, deliver me, NIV 21 But you, O Sovereign LORD, deal well with me for your name's sake; out of the goodness of your love, deliver me. LEB 22 for I [am] poor and needy, and my heart is wounded within me. NIV 22 For I am poor and needy, and my heart is wounded within me. LEB 23 Like a lengthening shadow I am passing away; I am shaken off like a locust. NIV 23 I fade away like an evening shadow; I am shaken off like a locust. LEB 24 My knees {buckle} from fasting, and my body grows lean without fat. NIV 24 My knees give way from fasting; my body is thin and gaunt. LEB 25 And [so] I am a disgrace to them; [when] they see me, they shake their heads. NIV 25 I am an object of scorn to my accusers; when they see me, they shake their heads. LEB 26 Help me, O Yahweh my God; save me according to your loyal love, NIV 26 Help me, O LORD my God; save me in accordance with your love. LEB 27 that they may know that this [is] your hand, [that] you, O Yahweh, you have done it. NIV 27 Let them know that it is your hand, that you, O LORD, have done it. LEB 28 Let them curse, but you bless. [When] they arise, let them be put to shame, that your servant may be glad. NIV 28 They may curse, but you will bless; when they attack they will be put to shame, but your servant will rejoice. LEB 29 Let my accusers put on disgrace, and let them cover [themselves] with their shame as with a robe. NIV 29 My accusers will be clothed with disgrace and wrapped in shame as in a cloak. LEB 30 I will give thanks to Yahweh exceedingly with my mouth, and in [the] midst of many I will praise him, NIV 30 With my mouth I will greatly extol the LORD; in the great throng I will praise him. LEB 31 for he stands at [the] right [hand] of [the] needy, to save [him] from those judging his life. NIV 31 For he stands at the right hand of the needy one, to save his life from those who condemn him.
