Psalm 35

NLT 1 A psalm of David. O LORD, oppose those who oppose me. Declare war on those who are attacking me. NIV 1 Contend, O LORD, with those who contend with me; fight against those who fight against me. NLT 2 Put on your armor, and take up your shield. Prepare for battle, and come to my aid. NIV 2 Take up shield and buckler; arise and come to my aid. NLT 3 Lift up your spear and javelin and block the way of my enemies. Let me hear you say, "I am your salvation!" NIV 3 Brandish spear and javelin against those who pursue me. Say to my soul, "I am your salvation." NLT 4 Humiliate and disgrace those trying to kill me; turn them back in confusion. NIV 4 May those who seek my life be disgraced and put to shame; may those who plot my ruin be turned back in dismay. NLT 5 Blow them away like chaff in the wind -- a wind sent by the angel of the LORD. NIV 5 May they be like chaff before the wind, with the angel of the LORD driving them away; NLT 6 Make their path dark and slippery, with the angel of the LORD pursuing them. NIV 6 may their path be dark and slippery, with the angel of the LORD pursuing them. NLT 7 Although I did them no wrong, they laid a trap for me. Although I did them no wrong, they dug a pit for me. NIV 7 Since they hid their net for me without cause and without cause dug a pit for me, NLT 8 So let sudden ruin overtake them! Let them be caught in the snare they set for me! Let them fall to destruction in the pit they dug for me. NIV 8 may ruin overtake them by surprise-- may the net they hid entangle them, may they fall into the pit, to their ruin. NLT 9 Then I will rejoice in the LORD. I will be glad because he rescues me. NIV 9 Then my soul will rejoice in the LORD and delight in his salvation. NLT 10 I will praise him from the bottom of my heart: "LORD, who can compare with you? Who else rescues the weak and helpless from the strong? Who else protects the poor and needy from those who want to rob them?" NIV 10 My whole being will exclaim, "Who is like you, O LORD? You rescue the poor from those too strong for them, the poor and needy from those who rob them." NLT 11 Malicious witnesses testify against me. They accuse me of things I don't even know about. NIV 11 Ruthless witnesses come forward; they question me on things I know nothing about. NLT 12 They repay me with evil for the good I do. I am sick with despair. NIV 12 They repay me evil for good and leave my soul forlorn. NLT 13 Yet when they were ill, I grieved for them. I even fasted and prayed for them, but my prayers returned unanswered. NIV 13 Yet when they were ill, I put on sackcloth and humbled myself with fasting. When my prayers returned to me unanswered, NLT 14 I was sad, as though they were my friends or family, as if I were grieving for my own mother. NIV 14 I went about mourning as though for my friend or brother. I bowed my head in grief as though weeping for my mother. NLT 15 But they are glad now that I am in trouble; they gleefully join together against me. I am attacked by people I don't even know; they hurl slander at me continually. NIV 15 But when I stumbled, they gathered in glee; attackers gathered against me when I was unaware. They slandered me without ceasing. NLT 16 They mock me with the worst kind of profanity, and they snarl at me. NIV 16 Like the ungodly they maliciously mocked; they gnashed their teeth at me. NLT 17 How long, O Lord, will you look on and do nothing? Rescue me from their fierce attacks. Protect my life from these lions! NIV 17 O Lord, how long will you look on? Rescue my life from their ravages, my precious life from these lions. NLT 18 Then I will thank you in front of the entire congregation. I will praise you before all the people. NIV 18 I will give you thanks in the great assembly; among throngs of people I will praise you. NLT 19 Don't let my treacherous enemies rejoice over my defeat. Don't let those who hate me without cause gloat over my sorrow. NIV 19 Let not those gloat over me who are my enemies without cause; let not those who hate me without reason maliciously wink the eye. NLT 20 They don't talk of peace; they plot against innocent people who are minding their own business. NIV 20 They do not speak peaceably, but devise false accusations against those who live quietly in the land. NLT 21 They shout that they have seen me doing wrong. "Aha," they say. "Aha! With our own eyes we saw him do it!" NIV 21 They gape at me and say, "Aha! Aha! With our own eyes we have seen it." NLT 22 O LORD, you know all about this. Do not stay silent. Don't abandon me now, O Lord. NIV 22 O LORD, you have seen this; be not silent. Do not be far from me, O Lord. NLT 23 Wake up! Rise to my defense! Take up my case, my God and my Lord. NIV 23 Awake, and rise to my defense! Contend for me, my God and Lord. NLT 24 Declare me "not guilty," O LORD my God, for you give justice. Don't let my enemies laugh about me in my troubles. NIV 24 Vindicate me in your righteousness, O LORD my God; do not let them gloat over me. NLT 25 Don't let them say, "Look! We have what we wanted! Now we will eat him alive!" NIV 25 Do not let them think, "Aha, just what we wanted!" or say, "We have swallowed him up." NLT 26 May those who rejoice at my troubles be humiliated and disgraced. May those who triumph over me be covered with shame and dishonor. NIV 26 May all who gloat over my distress be put to shame and confusion; may all who exalt themselves over me be clothed with shame and disgrace. NLT 27 But give great joy to those who have stood with me in my defense. Let them continually say, "Great is the LORD, who enjoys helping his servant." NIV 27 May those who delight in my vindication shout for joy and gladness; may they always say, "The LORD be exalted, who delights in the well-being of his servant." NLT 28 Then I will tell everyone of your justice and goodness, and I will praise you all day long. NIV 28 My tongue will speak of your righteousness and of your praises all day long.
