Psalm 38

CJB 1 A psalm of David, serving as a reminder: ADONAI, don't rebuke me when you are angry or discipline me when you are enraged, NIV 1 O LORD, do not rebuke me in your anger or discipline me in your wrath. CJB 2 for your arrows penetrate me deeply, and your hand is pressing me down. NIV 2 For your arrows have pierced me, and your hand has come down upon me. CJB 3 Your indignation left no part of me intact; my sin made my whole body sick; NIV 3 Because of your wrath there is no health in my body; my bones have no soundness because of my sin. CJB 4 for my iniquities loom high over my head as a heavy burden, too heavy for me. NIV 4 My guilt has overwhelmed me like a burden too heavy to bear. CJB 5 I have stinking, festering wounds because of my foolishness. NIV 5 My wounds fester and are loathsome because of my sinful folly. CJB 6 I am bent down, prostrate completely; I go about mourning all day long. NIV 6 I am bowed down and brought very low; all day long I go about mourning. CJB 7 For my insides burn with fever, and my whole body is sick. NIV 7 My back is filled with searing pain; there is no health in my body. CJB 8 I am numb, completely crushed; my anguished heart makes me groan aloud. NIV 8 I am feeble and utterly crushed; I groan in anguish of heart. CJB 9 Adonai, all my longing is known to you; my sighing is not hidden from you. NIV 9 All my longings lie open before you, O Lord; my sighing is not hidden from you. CJB 10 My heart is throbbing, my strength is gone, and the light in my eyes has left me. NIV 10 My heart pounds, my strength fails me; even the light has gone from my eyes. CJB 11 My friends and companions shun my disease; even the closest keep their distance. NIV 11 My friends and companions avoid me because of my wounds; my neighbors stay far away. CJB 12 Those seeking my life lay snares for me, those seeking to harm me speak of disaster and think up deceptions all day long. NIV 12 Those who seek my life set their traps, those who would harm me talk of my ruin; all day long they plot deception. CJB 13 But I'm like a deaf man - I don't hear it; and, like a mute, I don't say a word. NIV 13 I am like a deaf man, who cannot hear, like a mute, who cannot open his mouth; CJB 14 Yes, I've become like a man who doesn't hear and in whose mouth are no defenses. NIV 14 I have become like a man who does not hear, whose mouth can offer no reply. CJB 15 For it is in you, ADONAI, that I hope. You will answer, Adonai my God. NIV 15 I wait for you, O LORD; you will answer, O Lord my God. CJB 16 I said, "Don't let them gloat over me or boast against me when my foot slips." NIV 16 For I said, "Do not let them gloat or exalt themselves over me when my foot slips." CJB 17 For I am about to fall, and my pain is always with me. NIV 17 For I am about to fall, and my pain is ever with me. CJB 18 I acknowledge my guilt, I am anxious because of my sin. NIV 18 I confess my iniquity; I am troubled by my sin. CJB 19 But my enemies are alive and well, those who wrongfully hate me increase their numbers; NIV 19 Many are those who are my vigorous enemies; those who hate me without reason are numerous. CJB 20 and, since they repay good with evil, they oppose me because I pursue good. NIV 20 Those who repay my good with evil slander me when I pursue what is good. CJB 21 Don't abandon me, ADONAI! My God, don't be far from me! NIV 21 O LORD, do not forsake me; be not far from me, O my God. CJB 22 Come quickly to help me, Adonai, my salvation! NIV 22 Come quickly to help me, O Lord my Savior.
