Psalm 39

CEB 1 I promised I would watch my steps so as not to sin with my tongue; promised to keep my mouth shut as long as the wicked were in my presence. NIV 1 I said, "I will watch my ways and keep my tongue from sin; I will put a muzzle on my mouth as long as the wicked are in my presence." CEB 2 So I was completely quiet, silent. I kept my peace, but it did no good. My pain got worse. NIV 2 But when I was silent and still, not even saying anything good, my anguish increased. CEB 3 My heart got hot inside me; while stewing over it, the fire burned. Then I spoke out with my tongue: NIV 3 My heart grew hot within me, and as I meditated, the fire burned; then I spoke with my tongue: CEB 4 "Let me know my end, LORD. How many days do I have left? I want to know how brief my time is." NIV 4 "Show me, O LORD, my life's end and the number of my days; let me know how fleeting is my life. CEB 5 You've made my days so short; my lifetime is like nothing in your eyes. Yes, a human life is nothing but a puff of air! Selah NIV 5 You have made my days a mere handbreadth; the span of my years is as nothing before you. Each man's life is but a breath. "Selah" CEB 6 Yes, people wander around like shadows; yes, they hustle and bustle, but pointlessly; they don't even know who will get the wealth they've amassed. NIV 6 Man is a mere phantom as he goes to and fro: He bustles about, but only in vain; he heaps up wealth, not knowing who will get it. CEB 7 So now, Lord, what should I be waiting for? My hope is set on you. NIV 7 "But now, Lord, what do I look for? My hope is in you. CEB 8 Deliver me from all my sins; don't make me some foolish person's joke. NIV 8 Save me from all my transgressions; do not make me the scorn of fools. CEB 9 I am completely silent; I won't open my mouth because you have acted. NIV 9 I was silent; I would not open my mouth, for you are the one who has done this. CEB 10 Get this plague of yours off me! I'm being destroyed by the blows from your fist. NIV 10 Remove your scourge from me; I am overcome by the blow of your hand. CEB 11 You discipline people for their sin, punishing them; like a moth, you ruin what they treasure. Yes, a human life is just a puff of air! Selah NIV 11 You rebuke and discipline men for their sin; you consume their wealth like a moth-- each man is but a breath. "Selah" CEB 12 Hear my prayer, LORD! Listen closely to my cry for help! Please don't ignore my tears! I'm just a foreigner— an immigrant staying with you, just like all my ancestors were. NIV 12 "Hear my prayer, O LORD, listen to my cry for help; be not deaf to my weeping. For I dwell with you as an alien, a stranger, as all my fathers were. CEB 13 Look away from me so I can be happy again before I pass away and am gone. NIV 13 Look away from me, that I may rejoice again before I depart and am no more."
