Psalm 39

CJB 1 For the leader. Set in the style of Y'dutun. A psalm of David: I said, "I will watch how I behave, so that I won't sin with my tongue; I will put a muzzle on my mouth whenever the wicked confront me." NIV 1 I said, "I will watch my ways and keep my tongue from sin; I will put a muzzle on my mouth as long as the wicked are in my presence." CJB 2 I was silent, said nothing, not even good; but my pain kept being stirred up. NIV 2 But when I was silent and still, not even saying anything good, my anguish increased. CJB 3 My heart grew hot within me; whenever I thought of it, the fire burned. Then, [at last,] I let my tongue speak: NIV 3 My heart grew hot within me, and as I meditated, the fire burned; then I spoke with my tongue: CJB 4 "Make me grasp, ADONAI, what my end must be, what it means that my days are numbered; let me know what a transient creature I am. NIV 4 "Show me, O LORD, my life's end and the number of my days; let me know how fleeting is my life. CJB 5 You have made my days like handbreadths; for you, the length of my life is like nothing." Yes, everyone, no matter how firmly he stands, is merely a puff of wind. (Selah) NIV 5 You have made my days a mere handbreadth; the span of my years is as nothing before you. Each man's life is but a breath. "Selah" CJB 6 Humans go about like shadows; their turmoil is all for nothing. They accumulate wealth, not knowing who will enjoy its benefits. NIV 6 Man is a mere phantom as he goes to and fro: He bustles about, but only in vain; he heaps up wealth, not knowing who will get it. CJB 7 Now, Adonai, what am I waiting for? You are my only hope. NIV 7 "But now, Lord, what do I look for? My hope is in you. CJB 8 Rescue me from all my transgressions; don't make me the butt of fools. NIV 8 Save me from all my transgressions; do not make me the scorn of fools. CJB 9 I am silent, I keep my mouth shut, because it is you who have done it. NIV 9 I was silent; I would not open my mouth, for you are the one who has done this. CJB 10 Stop raining blows on me; the pounding of your fist is wearing me down. NIV 10 Remove your scourge from me; I am overcome by the blow of your hand. CJB 11 With rebukes you discipline people for their guilt; like a moth, you destroy what makes them attractive; yes, everyone is merely a puff of wind. (Selah) NIV 11 You rebuke and discipline men for their sin; you consume their wealth like a moth-- each man is but a breath. "Selah" CJB 12 Hear my prayer, ADONAI, listen to my cry, don't be deaf to my weeping; for with you, I am just a traveler passing through, like all my ancestors. NIV 12 "Hear my prayer, O LORD, listen to my cry for help; be not deaf to my weeping. For I dwell with you as an alien, a stranger, as all my fathers were. CJB 13 Turn your gaze from me, so I can smile again before I depart and cease to exist. NIV 13 Look away from me, that I may rejoice again before I depart and am no more."
