Psalm 88

NLT 1 For the choir director: A psalm of the descendants of Korah, to be sung to the tune "The Suffering of Affliction." A psalm of Heman the Ezrahite. A song. O LORD, God of my salvation, I have cried out to you day and night. NIV 1 O LORD, the God who saves me, day and night I cry out before you. NLT 2 Now hear my prayer; listen to my cry. NIV 2 May my prayer come before you; turn your ear to my cry. NLT 3 For my life is full of troubles, and death draws near. NIV 3 For my soul is full of trouble and my life draws near the grave. NLT 4 I have been dismissed as one who is dead, like a strong man with no strength left. NIV 4 I am counted among those who go down to the pit; I am like a man without strength. NLT 5 They have abandoned me to death, and I am as good as dead. I am forgotten, cut off from your care. NIV 5 I am set apart with the dead, like the slain who lie in the grave, whom you remember no more, who are cut off from your care. NLT 6 You have thrust me down to the lowest pit, into the darkest depths. NIV 6 You have put me in the lowest pit, in the darkest depths. NLT 7 Your anger lies heavy on me; wave after wave engulfs me. Interlude NIV 7 Your wrath lies heavily upon me; you have overwhelmed me with all your waves. "Selah" NLT 8 You have caused my friends to loathe me; you have sent them all away. I am in a trap with no way of escape. NIV 8 You have taken from me my closest friends and have made me repulsive to them. I am confined and cannot escape; NLT 9 My eyes are blinded by my tears. Each day I beg for your help, O LORD; I lift my pleading hands to you for mercy. NIV 9 my eyes are dim with grief. I call to you, O LORD, every day; I spread out my hands to you. NLT 10 Of what use to the dead are your miracles? Do the dead get up and praise you? Interlude NIV 10 Do you show your wonders to the dead? Do those who are dead rise up and praise you? "Selah" NLT 11 Can those in the grave declare your unfailing love? In the place of destruction, can they proclaim your faithfulness? NIV 11 Is your love declared in the grave, your faithfulness in Destruction ? NLT 12 Can the darkness speak of your miracles? Can anyone in the land of forgetfulness talk about your righteousness? NIV 12 Are your wonders known in the place of darkness, or your righteous deeds in the land of oblivion? NLT 13 O LORD, I cry out to you. I will keep on pleading day by day. NIV 13 But I cry to you for help, O LORD; in the morning my prayer comes before you. NLT 14 O LORD, why do you reject me? Why do you turn your face away from me? NIV 14 Why, O LORD, do you reject me and hide your face from me? NLT 15 I have been sickly and close to death since my youth. I stand helpless and desperate before your terrors. NIV 15 From my youth I have been afflicted and close to death; I have suffered your terrors and am in despair. NLT 16 Your fierce anger has overwhelmed me. Your terrors have cut me off. NIV 16 Your wrath has swept over me; your terrors have destroyed me. NLT 17 They swirl around me like floodwaters all day long. They have encircled me completely. NIV 17 All day long they surround me like a flood; they have completely engulfed me. NLT 18 You have taken away my companions and loved ones; only darkness remains. NIV 18 You have taken my companions and loved ones from me; the darkness is my closest friend.
