Lamentations 1:1-6 (Today's New International Version)

View In My Bible
1 How deserted1 lies the city, once so full of people!2 How like a widow3 is she, who once was great4 among the nations! She who was queen among the provinces has now become a slave.5 2 Bitterly she weeps6 at night, tears are on her cheeks. Among all her lovers7 there is none to comfort her. All her friends have betrayed8 her; they have become her enemies.9 3 After affliction and harsh labor, Judah has gone into exile.10 She dwells among the nations; she finds no resting place.11 All who pursue her have overtaken her12 in the midst of her distress. 4 The roads to Zion mourn,13 for no one comes to her appointed festivals. All her gateways are desolate,14 her priests groan, her young women grieve, and she is in bitter anguish.15 5 Her foes have become her masters; her enemies are at ease. The LORD has brought her grief16 because of her many sins.17 Her children have gone into exile,18 captive before the foe.19 6 All the splendor has departed from Daughter Zion.20 Her princes are like deer that find no pasture; in weakness they have fled21 before the pursuer.
