We have heard it with our ears,1 O God; our ancestors have told us2 what you did in their days, in days long ago.32
With your hand you drove out4 the nations and planted5 our ancestors; you crushed6 the peoples and made our ancestors flourish.73
It was not by their sword8 that they won the land, nor did their arm bring them victory; it was your right hand,9 your arm,10 and the light11 of your face, for you loved12 them.
You are my King13 and my God,14 who decreesa victories15 for Jacob.
Through you we push back16 our enemies; through your name we trample17 our foes.
I put no trust in my bow,18 my sword does not bring me victory;
but you give us victory19 over our enemies, you put our adversaries to shame.208
In God we make our boast21 all day long,22 and we will praise your name forever.b239
But now you have rejected24 and humbled us;25 you no longer go out with our armies.2610
You made us retreat27 before the enemy, and our adversaries have plundered28 us.
You gave us up to be devoured like sheep29 and have scattered us among the nations.3012
You sold your people for a pittance,31 gaining nothing from their sale.
You have made us a reproach32 to our neighbors,33 the scorn34 and derision35 of those around us.
You have made us a byword36 among the nations; the peoples shake their heads37 at us.
I live in disgrace38 all day long, and my face is covered with shame3916
at the taunts40 of those who reproach and revile41 me, because of the enemy, who is bent on revenge.4217
All this came upon us, though we had not forgotten43 you; we had not been false to your covenant.
Our hearts had not turned44 back; our feet had not strayed from your path.
But you crushed45 us and made us a haunt for jackals;46 you covered us over with deep darkness.4720
If we had forgotten48 the name of our God or spread out our hands to a foreign god,4921
would not God have discovered it, since he knows the secrets of the heart?5022
Yet for your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep51 to be slaughtered.5223
Awake,53 Lord! Why do you sleep?54 Rouse yourself !55 Do not reject us forever.5624
Why do you hide your face57 and forget58 our misery and oppression?5925
We are brought down to the dust;60 our bodies cling to the ground.
Rise up61 and help us; redeem62 us because of your unfailing love.63
