The dragona stood on the shore of the sea. And I saw a beast coming out of the sea.1 It had ten horns and seven heads,2 with ten crowns on its horns, and on each head a blasphemous name.32
The beast I saw resembled a leopard,4 but had feet like those of a bear5 and a mouth like that of a lion.6 The dragon gave the beast his power and his throne and great authority.73
One of the heads of the beast seemed to have had a fatal wound, but the fatal wound had been healed.8 The whole world was filled with wonder9 and followed the beast.
People worshiped the dragon because he had given authority to the beast, and they also worshiped the beast and asked, "Who is like10 the beast? Who can make war against it?"
The beast was given a mouth to utter proud words and blasphemies11 and to exercise its authority for forty-two months.126
It opened its mouth to blaspheme God, and to slander his name and his dwelling place and those who live in heaven.137
It was given power to make war14 against God's people and to conquer them. And it was given authority over every tribe, people, language and nation.158
All inhabitants of the earth16 will worship the beast--all whose names have not been written in the Lamb's book of life,17 the Lamb18 who was slain from the creation of the world.b199
Whoever has ears, let them hear.2010
"If anyone is to go into captivity, into captivity they will go. If anyone is to be killedc with the sword, with the sword they will be killed."d21 This calls for patient endurance and faithfulness22 on the part of God's people.23
Then I saw another beast, coming out of the earth.24 It had two horns like a lamb, but it spoke like a dragon.2512
It exercised all the authority26 of the first beast on its behalf,27 and made the earth and its inhabitants worship the first beast,28 whose fatal wound had been healed.2913
And it performed great signs,30 even causing fire to come down from heaven31 to the earth in full view of everyone.
Because of the signs32 it was given power to perform on behalf of the first beast, it deceived33 the inhabitants of the earth.34 It ordered them to set up an image in honor of the beast who was wounded by the sword and yet lived.3515
It was given power to give breath to the image of the first beast, so that it could speak and cause all who refused to worship36 the image to be killed.3716
It also forced all people, great and small,38 rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hands or on their foreheads,3917
so that they could not buy or sell unless they had the mark,40 which is the name of the beast or the number of its name.4118
This calls for wisdom.42 Let those who have insight calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man.e43 That number is 666.
