What Does It Mean for Us That God Is Worthy?

“If you refuse to take up your cross and follow me, you are not worthy of being mine” (Matthew 10:38).

“So they worshiped and served the things God created instead of the Creator himself, who is worthy of eternal praise!” (Romans 1:25).

“We pleaded with you, encouraged you, and urged you to live your lives in a way that God would consider worthy. For he called you to share in his Kingdom and glory” (1 Thessalonians 2:12).

“I love you, LORD; you are my strength. The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my savior; my God is my rock, in whom I find protection. He is my shield, the power that saves me, and my place of safety. I called on the LORD, who is worthy of praise, and he saved me from my enemies” (Psalm 18:1-3).

King David understood the worthiness of God. As a shepherd boy, he was all but overlooked by his family as all of his father’s other sons lined up to be chosen by the prophet Samuel. But the Lord saw him then, and continued in faithfulness to David all the days of his life. Even in his wayward and rebellious seasons, David knew who God was: worthy of praise.

In our own lives, the worthiness of God helps us to process our circumstances. When we follow Christ Jesus, the perspective from which we view the world shifts. Instead of being self-focused, our realization of the worthiness of the Lord moves our hearts to worship Him! Like David, we begin to realize, He is our strength. Through the Holy Spirit, we have the strength of the Living God living in us! The Lord is our Rock, our Fortress, and our Savior. God protects, shields, saves and keeps us safe. He is worthy of our praise indeed. David concluded Psalm 18:

“The LORD lives! Praise to my Rock! May the God of my salvation be exalted! He is the God who pays back those who harm me; he subdues the nations under me and rescues me from my enemies. You hold me safe beyond the reach of my enemies; you save me from violent opponents. For this, O LORD, I will praise you among the nations; I will sing praises to your name. You give great victories to your king; you show unfailing love to your anointed, to David and all his descendants forever” (Psalm 18:46-50).

One of the hardest realities we face in our daily lives is the challenge to make sense out of the pain and suffering in this world. The injustice and unfairness which wreaks havoc on our lives can blur our perspective on the worthiness of God. When we are faithful to continue seeking Him in His Word and through prayer – even allowing Him to speak to us through a beautiful scene of His creation – God is faithful to remind us of His presence.

He is not far off, as Scripture promises, but near to us. Through Christ Jesus, He is in us. Worship to the One True God rights our hearts when the world presses in on us. Life carries its share of trials and hardships, but Worthy is God. He will right all wrongs, and heal all hurts, in His time.
