A Prayer to Trust God’s Character When You Can’t See His Plan - Your Daily Prayer - April 7

A Prayer to Trust God’s Character When You Can’t See His Plan

Bible Reading:
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” - Proverbs 3:5-6
Listen or Read Below:
The day my husband lost his job, I didn’t panic. I told myself there had to be a reason. God is in control. He has a plan. Those words were true, but I’ll be honest: they felt thin in the days that followed.
We had children to feed and bills to pay. The future suddenly felt very uncertain. I believed in God’s character. I couldn’t see a single thing that looked like His plan. And leaning not on my own understanding? That’s a lot harder when your own understanding is screaming that something has gone terribly wrong. Even worse, something is going to go terribly wrong.
About a month in, we were at church on a Sunday morning during worship when the words of a song rang out across the room: “I trust in God my Savior, the One who will never fail. He will never fail. I trust in God.” Something happened in my heart in that moment. My soul settled in with those words, and God’s presence was evident to me. My heart united with those lyrics, and I sang them with everything I had. I wasn’t singing about my circumstances. I was singing about His character.
That’s the distinction Proverbs 3:5-6 is making. I think it’s interesting that the verse doesn’t say to trust in God’s plan. It says trust in the Lord. Trust in who He is, not just what He’s doing. There will be seasons when what He’s doing makes no common sense at all. This crossroads is where we choose what we believe.
Eight months passed before Matt landed a contract job. Eight months of waiting and wondering, then choosing to trust what we knew to be true about God, even when it felt like we couldn’t see evidence of His provision in our bank account or our calendar.
When I look back at that season, the most significant thing that happened during those eight months wasn’t the provision of a job. It was what God was doing inside our family. He deepened our faith. He grew our trust in His provision in ways that comfortable seasons cannot produce. He gave us a hope that He was always, always in control. He will carry us through every hard season.
If you’re in a waiting season right now, trusting a God whose plan you cannot see, I want you to know that His character has not changed. He is still faithful. He has never failed.
Whatever you’re facing, you can trust Him with it.
Let’s Pray:
Heavenly Father,
I’ll be honest with You… I can’t see what You’re doing right now. The circumstances in front of me don’t look like a plan. They look like a problem. My logic keeps trying to take over, trying to figure out what You’re doing and why You’re doing it this way.
I know You’re not asking me to understand. You’re asking me to trust. So today I choose to lean on Your character instead of my confusion. You are faithful. You are good. You are a Provider who has never once failed the people who trust in You. That is who You are, and that doesn’t change based on what I can see.
Make my paths straight, Lord, even when the road ahead is hidden from my view. Do the deep work in me that only waiting can produce. And when fear tries to convince me that You’ve forgotten me, bring me back to what I know is true about You.
I trust in You, my Savior. The One who never fails.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
