7 Comforting Verses to Give You Strength in Hard Times

It’s no secret that the times we are living in right now are some of the most challenging we have ever experienced in our lifetimes. From higher costs of living to an uptick in violence and more hostility toward others, especially Christians, it can feel like our strength won’t get us through this period alive.

However, we are reminded countless times in the Bible that we can’t rely on our own strength to make sense of things and soldier through the various issues we face daily. We must rely on the strength of our Savior, knowing our God has filled us with the Holy Spirit to move forward when life is tough.

With these seven Bible verses, we can be assured that no matter the storms raging around us, we will have the strength to stand firm and make it through to the end.

Seven Bible Verses for Strength in Hard Times

1. 1 Chronicles 16:11

“Seek the Lord and His strength; Seek His face evermore!”

We learn in this verse that God encourages us to seek Him and His strength always. If we seek God and His strength, we will notice it is always on the ready. God knows what is ahead for us in our journeys through life and knows what strength must be available to combat the issue. Once you seek His face, His strength will flow into you, empowering you for the situation.

2. Deuteronomy 31:6

“Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the Lord your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you.”

This verse from Deuteronomy is quoted regularly by people because it reminds us not to fear what is ahead while recognizing that God doesn’t leave us to face trials alone. The first part of the verse encourages us to strengthen ourselves and have courage in the face of hard times, instead of being fearful of the future. Coupled with that awareness is knowing that God is there, not leaving or forsaking us, as we all go through the hardship together.

3. Psalm 50:15

“Call upon Me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify Me.”

The book of Psalms gives a breathtaking view of David’s emotional relationship with God, depicting some of the highs and lows we can encounter in our own relationship with God. But what David does regularly is reach out to God, and in this verse, God is telling David he only needs to call out for help. David shared consistently in the Psalms that He is always there when David would need him, as God states in the latter part of the verse that He would deliver David from the trial and be glorified in the process.

This isn’t meant as an ego trip to God, but more of an understanding that God only wants to help His children out of difficulty. And when that happens, you can think of nothing else to do but praise the Father.

4. Jeremiah 29:11

“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.”

Many consider this Scripture their go-to verse when enduring challenging times, as the prophet Jeremiah reminds us that God states His intention is to give us hope, peace, and a future, not heartache and evil. God shares that He knows the thoughts He has for us – His intentions – as they are what He has wanted for all His children, including Jesus. No matter what the enemy tries to tell you during the hard times, God doesn’t want to abuse us, but to see us prosper and grow in faith in Him.

5. 2 Thessalonians 3:3

“But the Lord is faithful, who will establish you and guard you from the evil one.”

Often during hard times, we wonder how much longer the difficulties will continue and whether God will make good on His promises. Will He get me through this time, or am I forgotten like I’m forgotten by others? Yet, this verse shows that God is faithful and provides protection and strength against the evil one. He isn’t leaving you to fend for yourself, but preparing you to stand strong against the enemy God will ultimately defeat for you.

6. 1 Corinthians 10:13

“No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.”

First Corinthians 10:13 shares that temptations to do wrong, or for our own gain, will happen to us as humans. But temptations to really bring us down will be stopped by God. Many think of the first half of this verse when it comes to hard times, but don’t reflect on the second half of the verse that describes temptations beyond our strength to resist. The apostle Paul shares that those unbearable temptations in difficulties will still not take us down because God provides us a way out or a way through. You will face challenges where you don’t see how you will get through, but take heart that God already knows it and has a way ahead to get you through it.

7. Psalm 62:2

“He only is my rock and my salvation; He is my defense; I shall not be greatly moved.”

This verse from Psalms presents David’s heart and declaration of faith in God, as he proclaims God is his rock and salvation. God is his main form of defense and because of this, whatever life throws at him, David will not be moved or shaken. Life’s storms will try to convince us that we don’t have any steady footing and will be swallowed up with no escape. However, David reminds us that God is our defense because the Savior is our rock and salvation, and when we accept His help, no storm will knock us down!

A Prayer for God's Supernatural Strength in Hard Times

Now let us pray on these verses that were given, asking for God’s strength to fill us when we have difficult moments in our lives.

Heavenly Father,

Thank you so much for being with us each and every day, through the good times and the bad times. We pray for Your supernatural strength to fill us up as we face the hard situations our day will bring, knowing that You are there with us through every moment: growing us, loving us, and reminding us that this situation will only strengthen us in faith. Thank you for Your love, Your guidance, and Your mercy to love us as we face these hard times. In Jesus’s name, I pray,

Amen.

The God of the Impossible

It is unavoidable that we will go through times where life throws us so many curves, we don’t know if we will make it through the day and night. However, when we ask Jesus into our hearts, it doesn’t mean God picks and chooses when He will help.

It also doesn’t mean that God expects you to rely on yourself to endure the struggles you are facing. God knows that the situations happening today, as well as those in the future, will require more than we have in us at times. So, He states in His Word that though the situations look intense and impossible, He is the God of possible and will be our guide and support through those times.

Life will make it seem like we have to rely on ourselves to succeed, but God lets us know that we can count on Him for what lays ahead, knowing these situations will strength our inner faith and assurance that we are His children.
