6 Powerful "I WILL" Promises of Jesus

Have you ever had someone promise you something and not follow through? Big or small, when someone breaks a promise, a slew of emotions journey through your heart and mind. This made me consider why we put so much power in a promise. Why do we feel angry or disappointed when someone makes us a promise, and then breaks it?

To answer those questions, we must consider what a promise really is. It is not just empty words out of a person’s mouth. It is not meaningless text on a sheet of paper. A promise is a commitment and it is meant to be taken seriously.

Promises are hard work. When we promise something, we may have to rearrange schedules or say no to other opportunities that arise. The message of a promise is an affirmation of love, respect, friendship, and human connection. It says, “someone care about me.”

Since the beginning of time, people have been making promises. Promises hold value and importance in a society. When you break them, others don’t seem to like it very much.

What Is Jesus Promising When He Says, “I Will?”

Jesus knew the importance of a promise. He knew what they meant to the Christian. The “I Will” statements of Christ declare many promises, but I want to share six of those with you. These are statements and assurances from our Savior that we can count on. He will never back down on any of these promises.

The first promise we will discuss comes from John 6:37 and again in Revelation 3:20. In both verses, Jesus is letting His children know that if we come to Him, He will never drive us away. In Revelation, Christ is speaking to the church at Laodicea and promises that anyone who hears his voice and opens the door will receive Him and eat with Him. John 6:37 says: “All those the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away.”

These verses share the promise of salvation. Christ is clearly saying that He will take us in and care for us. He will give us new life and save us from an eternity in hell. When we are in the hands of God, we cannot be plucked out. When we accept the gift of salvation, we can never lose it.

2. Usability

One of the biggest complaints I hear from Christians is that they are too old or not smart enough for Christ to use. When Christ calls you to something, He already knows your strengths, weaknesses, and your age. He knows what you are capable of.

Christians can be hard on themselves and prevent the full blessings of God from being revealed. Before I began writing, I never thought I could be a help to someone else. I even caught myself saying, “I can’t do this. I am not good enough.”

Jesus says, “Come, follow me and I will make you fishers of men” in Matthew 4:19. He does not say, follow me and I will assign you tasks you think your knowledgeable of. Christ is clearly promising that if we just follow Him, He will do the work in us. He will transform us into disciples who are usable.

While you may feel inadequate, remember that our Lord has promised to make us fishers of men. He will lead the transformation; all you need to do is follow.

Christians are not free from getting distracted and lost. We are not free from making the wrong decisions. Our sinful nature fights against us every day. Because of this, we need guidance, and who better to give that than the Son of God.

When I became a wife, I had no idea what my role was. When I became a mother, I really had no clue what I was doing. Now, I am a pastor’s wife that feels lost many days. It is in these moments and in this journey that I need guidance.

In the parable about the wise and foolish builders, Jesus begins his teaching by stating, “I will show you what he is like who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice” (Luke 6:47). Here we find Jesus promising his guidance to understand truth. He will give us guidance to make right decisions in our lives. He will help us understand His will.

Guidance for our lives come from being close to Jesus. He longs to know his children intimately. When we have a close relationship with our Savior, He reveals His will for us, and we can see His guidance. We will make decisions and take directions that glorify our Lord.

4. Rest and Renewal

Don’t we all desire rest and renewal from time to time. The Christian life is full of blessings, but it is not easy. In Matthew 11:28, we read, “Come to me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” What powerful words!

The greatest promise we can receive on earth is one that says you will never be alone. Loneliness is not a fun place to be, but Christ promises we won’t ever be alone. When we are tired, we can rest in Him. When we feel like we can’t go on, He reassures us. When our walk with Christ seems blah, we can be renewed and on fire again.

We find the promise of the holy spirit in John 14:16. “And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever." Jesus is speaking to his disciples about why He must go away and reassuring them that even though He will be gone physically, they will not be alone. The holy spirit will come and be a counselor to them.

Today, Christians receive the holy spirit at the moment they accept Christ in their hearts. This spirit will convict us of sin. It will guide us at the crossroads of life. The holy spirit comforts, gives understanding, inspires, and empowers us.   

Christ did not return to the Father and leave us as orphans groping in darkness. He returned to the Father and gifted us the holy spirit so we may continue the work of building the kingdom of God.

6. Eternity in Heaven

Most people walk through their earthly life preparing for their futures. People invest money so they may retire comfortably. Parents write wills so that their children are taken care of when they’re gone. We even make weekly plans and lists for the next day’s activities.

All this planning is good, but we have a better plan and promise from God.

“And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am” (John 14:3).

Jesus said I will come back. We have that promise. He is preparing a place for us in heaven and when He is ready, we will be with him in that place. Our futures are settled. We will see Jesus again and spend forevermore worshipping him. We have peace knowing we have a home being prepared by Christ and that he will come for us.

In my study of Scripture, I have learned that Christ was not just making general promises to His children. He was making Himself known and declaring that when we follow Christ, we will never be alone. We will always have his love and guidance. He can and desires to use us and give us rest when we need it.

We are promised the full blessings of God because Jesus said, “I WILL.”
