1 Reyes 15

1 En el año dieciocho del rey Jeroboam, hijo de Nabat, Abiam comenzó a reinar sobre Judá.

2 Reinó tres años en Jerusalén; y el nombre de su madre era Maaca, hija de Abisalom.

3 Y anduvo en todos los pecados que su padre había cometido antes de él; y su corazón no estuvo dedicado por entero al SEÑOR su Dios, como el corazón de su padre David.

4 Pero por amor a David, el SEÑOR su Dios le dio una lámpara en Jerusalén, levantando a su hijo después de él y sosteniendo a Jerusalén;

5 porque David había hecho lo recto ante los ojos del SEÑOR, y no se había apartado de nada de lo que El le había ordenado durante todos los días de su vida, excepto en el caso de Urías heteo.

6 Y hubo guerra entre Roboam y Jeroboam todos los días de su vida.

7 Los demás hechos de Abiam y todo lo que hizo, ¿no están escritos en el libro de las Crónicas de los reyes de Judá? Y hubo guerra entre Abiam y Jeroboam.

8 Y durmió Abiam con sus padres y lo sepultaron en la ciudad de David; y su hijo Asa reinó en su lugar.

9 En el año veinte de Jeroboam, rey de Israel, Asa comenzó a reinar sobre Judá.

10 Reinó cuarenta y un años en Jerusalén; y el nombre de su madre era Maaca, hija de Abisalom.

11 Asa hizo lo recto ante los ojos del SEÑOR, como David su padre.

12 También expulsó de la tierra a los sodomitas de cultos paganos, y quitó todos los ídolos que sus padres habían hecho.

13 También quitó a Maaca su madre de ser reina madre, porque ella había hecho una horrible imagen de Asera; Asa derribó su horrible imagen y la quemó junto al torrente Cedrón.

14 Pero los lugares altos no fueron quitados; sin embargo el corazón de Asa estuvo dedicado por entero al SEÑOR todos sus días.

15 Y trajo a la casa del SEÑOR las cosas consagradas por su padre y sus propias cosas consagradas: plata, oro y utensilios.

16 Y hubo guerra entre Asa y Baasa, rey de Israel, todos sus días.

17 Y Baasa, rey de Israel, subió contra Judá y fortificó Ramá para prevenir que nadie saliera o entrara en ayuda de Asa, rey de Judá.

18 Entonces Asa tomó toda la plata y el oro que había quedado en los tesoros de la casa del SEÑOR y en los tesoros de la casa del rey, y los entregó en manos de sus siervos. Y el rey Asa los envió a Ben-adad, hijo de Tabrimón, hijo de Hezión, rey de Aram, que habitaba en Damasco, diciendo:

19 Haya alianza entre tú y yo, como hubo entre mi padre y tu padre. He aquí, te he enviado un presente de plata y de oro; ve, rompe tu alianza con Baasa, rey de Israel, para que se aparte de mí.

20 Ben-adad escuchó al rey Asa y envió a los jefes de sus ejércitos contra las ciudades de Israel, y conquistó Ijón, Dan, Abel-bet-maaca, y toda Cineret, además de toda la tierra de Neftalí.

21 Y sucedió que cuando Baasa lo oyó, dejó de fortificar Ramá, y se quedó en Tirsa.

22 Entonces el rey Asa hizo proclamación a todo Judá, sin excepción, y se llevaron las piedras de Ramá y la madera con que Baasa había estado edificando. Y con ellas el rey Asa fortificó Geba de Benjamín y Mizpa.

23 Los demás hechos de Asa y todo su poderío, todo lo que hizo y las ciudades que edificó, ¿no están escritos en el libro de las Crónicas de los reyes de Judá? Sólo que en el tiempo de su vejez se enfermó de los pies.

24 Y durmió Asa con sus padres y fue sepultado con sus padres en la ciudad de David su padre; y su hijo Josafat reinó en su lugar.

25 Y Nadab, hijo de Jeroboam, comenzó a reinar sobre Israel en el segundo año de Asa, rey de Judá, y reinó sobre Israel dos años.

26 E hizo lo malo ante los ojos del SEÑOR, y anduvo en el camino de su padre y en el pecado con que hizo pecar a Israel.

27 Entonces Baasa, hijo de Ahías, de la casa de Isacar, conspiró contra él, y Baasa lo hirió en Gibetón, que pertenecía a los filisteos, mientras Nadab y todo Israel sitiaban a Gibetón.

28 Baasa lo mató en el tercer año de Asa, rey de Judá, y reinó en su lugar.

29 Y sucedió que en cuanto fue rey, hirió a toda la casa de Jeroboam. No dejó con vida a ninguno de los de Jeroboam, hasta destruirlos, conforme a la palabra que el SEÑOR había hablado por medio de su siervo Ahías silonita,

30 por los pecados que Jeroboam había cometido, y con los cuales había hecho pecar a Israel, y por la provocación con que provocó a ira al SEÑOR, Dios de Israel.

31 Los demás hechos de Nadab y todo lo que hizo, ¿no están escritos en el libro de las Crónicas de los reyes de Israel?

32 Hubo guerra entre Asa y Baasa, rey de Israel, todos los días que vivieron.

33 En el tercer año de Asa, rey de Judá, Baasa, hijo de Ahías, comenzó a reinar sobre todo Israel en Tirsa, y reinó veinticuatro años.

34 E hizo lo malo ante los ojos del SEÑOR, y anduvo en el camino de Jeroboam y en el pecado con que hizo pecar a Israel.

Chapter 15

Wicked reign of Abijam, king of Judah. (1-8) Good reign of Asa, king of Judah. (9-24) The evil reigns of Nadab and Baasha in Israel. (25-34)

Verses 1-8 Abijam's heart was not perfect with the Lord his God; he wanted sincerity; he began well, but he fell off, and walked in all the sins of his father, following his bad example, though he had seen the bad consequences of it. David's family was continued as a lamp in Jerusalem, to maintain the true worship of God there, when the light of Divine truth was extinguished in all other places. The Lord has still taken care of his cause, while those who ought to have been serviceable thereto have lived and perished in their sins. The Son of David will still continue a light to his church, to establish it in truth and righteousness to the end of time. There are two kinds of fulfilling the law, one legal, the other by the gospel. Legal is, when men do all things required in the law, and that by themselves. None ever thus fulfilled the law but Christ, and Adam before his fall. The gospel manner of fulfilling the law is, to believe in Christ who fulfilled the law for us, and to endeavour in the whole man to obey God in all his precepts. And this is accepted of God, as to all those that are in Christ. Thus David and others are said to fulfil the law.

Verses 9-24 Asa did what was right in the eyes of the Lord. That is right indeed which is so in God's eyes. Asa's times were times of reformation. He removed that which was evil; there reformation begins, and a great deal he found to do. When Asa found idolatry in the court, he rooted it out thence. Reformation must begin at home. Asa honours and respects his mother; he loves her well, but he loves God better. Those that have power are happy when thus they have hearts to use it well. We must not only cease to do evil, but learn to do well; not only cast away the idols of our iniquity, but dedicate ourselves and our all to God's honour and glory. Asa was cordially devoted to the service of God, his sins not arising from presumption. But his league with Benhadad arose from unbelief. Even true believers find it hard, in times of urgent danger, to trust in the Lord with all their heart. Unbelief makes way for carnal policy, and thus for one sin after another. Unbelief has often led Christians to call in the help of the Lord's enemies in their contests with their brethren; and some who once shone brightly, have thus been covered with a dark cloud towards the end of their days.

Verses 25-34 During the single reign of Asa in Judah, the government of Israel was in six or seven different hands. Observe the ruin of the family of Jeroboam; no word of God shall fall to the ground. Divine threatenings are not designed merely to terrify. Ungodly men execute the just judgments of God upon each other. But in the midst of dreadful sins and this apparent confusion, the Lord carries on his own plan: when it is fully completed, the glorious justice, wisdom, truth, and mercy therein displayed, shall be admired and adored through all the ages of eternity.
