1 Hiram, rey de Tiro, envió sus siervos a Salomón, cuando oyó que le habían ungido rey en lugar de su padre, pues Hiram siempre había sido amigo de David.

2 Entonces Salomón envió palabra a Hiram, diciendo:

3 Tú sabes que mi padre David no pudo edificar una casa al nombre del SEÑOR su Dios a causa de las guerras en que se vio envuelto, hasta que el SEÑOR puso a sus enemigos bajo las plantas de sus pies.

4 Mas ahora el SEÑOR mi Dios me ha dado paz por todas partes; no hay adversario ni calamidad.

5 Y he aquí, pienso edificar una casa al nombre del SEÑOR mi Dios, como el SEÑOR habló a mi padre David, diciendo: "Tu hijo, a quien pondré sobre el trono en tu lugar, él edificará la casa a mi nombre."

6 Ahora pues, ordena que me corten cedros del Líbano, y mis siervos estarán con tus siervos; y te daré salarios para tus siervos conforme a todo lo que tú digas, pues sabes que no hay nadie entre nosotros que sepa labrar madera como los sidonios.

7 Y sucedió que cuando Hiram oyó las palabras de Salomón, se alegró mucho y dijo: Bendito sea hoy el SEÑOR, que ha dado a David un hijo sabio sobre este pueblo tan numeroso.

8 Y envió Hiram respuesta a Salomón, diciendo: He oído el mensaje que me enviaste; haré lo que tú quieras en cuanto a las maderas de cedro y de ciprés.

9 Mis siervos las bajarán desde el Líbano hasta el mar; y haré de ellas balsas para ir por mar hasta el lugar adonde me indiques, y allí haré que las desaten y tú te las llevarás. Entonces cumplirás mi deseo dando alimento a mi casa.

10 Dio, pues, Hiram a Salomón todo lo que deseaba de las maderas de cedro y de ciprés.

11 Y Salomón daba a Hiram veinte mil coros de trigo como alimento para su casa, y veinte coros de aceite batido; esto daba Salomón a Hiram año tras año.

12 El SEÑOR dio sabiduría a Salomón, tal como le había prometido, y hubo paz entre Hiram y Salomón, y los dos hicieron un pacto.

13 El rey Salomón impuso una leva a todo Israel, y la leva fue de treinta mil hombres.

14 Y los envió al Líbano, en relevos de diez mil cada mes; y se quedaban un mes en el Líbano y dos meses en su casa. Y Adoniram estaba al frente de la leva.

15 Salomón tenía setenta mil hombres que llevaban las cargas, y ochenta mil canteros en las montañas,

16 además de los tres mil trescientos oficiales de Salomón que estaban al frente de la obra y que gobernaban la gente que hacía el trabajo.

17 Entonces el rey dio órdenes, y sacaron grandes piedras, piedras costosas, para echar los cimientos de la casa con piedras labradas.

18 Y los constructores de Salomón, los constructores de Hiram y los giblitas cortaron y prepararon las maderas y las piedras para edificar la casa.

Chapter 5

Solomon's agreement with Hiram. (1-9) Solomon's workmen for the temple. (10-18)

Verses 1-9 Here is Solomon's design to build a temple. There is no adversary, no Satan, so the word is; no instrument of Satan to oppose it, or to divert from it. Satan does all he can, to hinder temple work. When there is no evil abroad, then let us be ready and active in that which is good, and get forward. Let God's promises quicken our endeavours. And all outward skill and advantages should be made serviceable to the interests of Christ's kingdom. It Tyre supplies Israel with craftsmen, Israel will supply Tyre with corn, ( Ezekiel 27:17 ) . Thus, by the wise disposal of Providence, one country has need of another, and is benefitted by another, that there may be dependence on one another, to the glory of God.

Verses 10-18 The temple was chiefly built by the riches and labour of Gentiles, which typified their being called into the church. Solomon commanded, and they brought costly stones for the foundation. Christ, who is laid for a Foundation, is a chosen and precious Stone. We should lay our foundation firm, and bestow most pains on that part of our religion which lies out of the sight of men. And happy those who, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, for a habitation of God through the Spirit. Who among us will build in the house of the Lord?

This chapter relates Solomon's preparation for building the temple: on Hiram, king of Tyre, sending a congratulatory letter to him, he returned another to him, signifying his intention to build an house for God, and requesting him to supply him with timber, and men to work it, 1Ki 5:1-6; to which Hiram readily agreed, and sent him cedar and fir, and Solomon in return sent him food for his household; and things went on very amicably between them, 1Ki 5:7-12; the chapter concludes with an account of Solomon's workmen, where, how, and in what they were employed, 1Ki 5:13-18.
