Jeremías 39

1 Y aconteció que Jerusalén fue tomada en el año noveno de Sedequías, rey de Judá, en el décimo mes, cuando vino Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia, con todo su ejército contra Jerusalén, y la sitiaron.

2 En el año undécimo de Sedequías, en el mes cuarto, a los nueve días del mes, se abrió brecha en el muro de la ciudad.

3 Y entraron todos los oficiales del rey de Babilonia y se sentaron en la puerta Central: Nergal-sarezer, Samgar-nebo, Sarse-quim el Rabsaris, Nergal-sarezer el Rabmag y todos los demás oficiales del rey de Babilonia.

4 Y sucedió que cuando los vieron Sedequías, rey de Judá, y todos los hombres de guerra, huyeron y salieron de la ciudad de noche por el camino del jardín del rey, por la puerta entre los dos muros; y se fueron por el camino del Arabá .

5 Pero el ejército de los caldeos los persiguió, y alcanzaron a Sedequías en los llanos de Jericó; lo apresaron y lo llevaron a Ribla en la tierra de Hamat, donde Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia, dictó sentencia contra él.

6 Entonces el rey de Babilonia degolló a los hijos de Sedequías ante sus ojos en Ribla; también el rey de Babilonia degolló a todos los nobles de Judá.

7 Después sacó los ojos a Sedequías y lo ató con grillos de bronce para llevarlo a Babilonia.

8 Y los caldeos prendieron fuego al palacio del rey y a las casas del pueblo y derribaron los muros de Jerusalén.

9 Y en cuanto al resto del pueblo que quedaba en la ciudad, a los desertores que se habían pasado a él, y los demás del pueblo que quedaban, Nabuzaradán, capitán de la guardia, los llevó cautivos a Babilonia.

10 Pero a algunos de los más pobres del pueblo que no tenían nada, Nabuzaradán, capitán de la guardia, los dejó en la tierra de Judá, y aquel día les dio viñas y campos.

11 Y dio órdenes Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia, a Nabuzaradán, capitán de la guardia, respecto a Jeremías, diciendo:

12 Tómalo y vela por él, y no le hagas daño alguno; sino que harás con él conforme a lo que él mismo te diga.

13 Entonces dio órdenes Nabuzaradán, capitán de la guardia, juntamente con Nabuzaradán el Rabsaris, y Nergal-sarezer el Rabmag, y todos los oficiales principales del rey de Babilonia;

14 y enviaron a sacar a Jeremías del patio de la guardia y lo pusieron al cuidado de Gedalías, hijo de Ahicam, hijo de Safán, para que lo llevara a casa. Y se quedó en medio del pueblo.

15 Y la palabra del SEÑOR había venido a Jeremías mientras estaba detenido en el patio de la guardia, diciendo:

16 Ve y habla al etíope Ebed-melec, diciendo: "Así dice el SEÑOR de los ejércitos, el Dios de Israel: 'He aquí, traigo mis palabras sobre esta ciudad para mal y no para bien; y se cumplirán delante de ti en aquel día.

17 'Pero yo te libraré en aquel día'declara el SEÑOR"y no serás entregado en manos de los hombres que temes.

18 'Porque ciertamente te libraré, y no caerás a espada; antes bien, tendrás tu vida por botín, porque confiaste en mí'declara el SEÑOR."

Chapter 39

The taking of Jerusalem. (1-10) Jeremiah used well. (11-14) Promises of safety to Ebed-melech. (15-18)

Verses 1-10 Jerusalem was so strong, that the inhabitants believed the enemy could never enter it. But sin provoked God to withdraw his protection, and then it was as weak as other cities. Zedekiah had his eyes put out; so he was condemned to darkness who had shut his eyes against the clear light of God's word. Those who will not believe God's words, will be convinced by the event. Observe the wonderful changes of Providence, how uncertain are earthly possessions; and see the just dealings of Providence: but whether the Lord makes men poor or rich, nothing will profit them while they cleave to their sins.

Verses 11-14 The servants of God alone are prepared for all events; and they are delivered and comforted, while the wicked suffer. They often meet with more kindness from the profane, than from hypocritical professors of godliness. The Lord will raise them up friends, do them good, and perform all his promises.

Verses 15-18 Here is a message to assure Ebed-melech of a recompence for his great kindness to Jeremiah. Because thou hast put thy trust in me, saith the Lord. God recompenses men's services according to their principles. Those who trust God in the way of duty, as this good man did, will find that their hope shall not fail in times of the greatest danger.

This chapter gives an account of the taking of Jerusalem by the Chaldeans, according to the several prophecies of Jeremiah concerning it. The time of taking it, and by whom, after a siege of eighteen months, Jer 39:1-3; several things relating to King Zedekiah; his flight; the taking of him; the bringing him to the king of Babylon, and his sentence on him; the execution of that sentence, slaying his sons and nobles, putting out his eyes, and carrying him in chains to Babylon, Jer 39:4-7; the destruction of the city is described, by burning the houses in it, breaking down its walls, carrying the people captive, all, except a few poor persons left in the land, Jer 39:8-10; the preservation of Jeremiah, according to the king of Babylon's orders by his princes; and the committing him to the care of Gedaliah, the governor of the poor Jews, Jer 39:11-14; and the chapter is concluded with a promise of the protection of Ebedmelech, made by the Lord before the taking of the city, while the prophet was in prison; and which, no doubt, had its accomplishment, Jer 39:15-18.
