John 4:41 Meaning and Commentary

John 4:41

And many more believed
The Vulgate Latin, and all the Oriental versions add, "on him": when he was come into the city, and had preached to the inhabitants in general, a larger multitude than before believed in him as the Messiah, and professed him, and became followers of him.

Because of his own word;
which came to them, not in word only, but in power, and was the power of God unto salvation to them; and was received by them, not as the word of man, but as the word of God; and it wrought effectually in them, and was an hammer to break their rocky hearts in pieces, and to bring them into subjection to himself, his Gospel and ordinances: whether his word or doctrine was accompanied with miracles is not certain; this shows, that their faith in him was founded on his own word, which fell with great weight upon them. It seems to have an emphasis laid upon it, his own word, in distinction from the woman's saying.

John 4:41 In-Context

39 Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in Jesus because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me everything I ever did.”
40 So when the Samaritans came to Him, they asked Him to stay with them, and He stayed two days.
41 And many more believed because of His message.
42 They said to the woman, “We now believe not only because of your words; we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man truly is the Savior of the world.”
43 After two days, Jesus left for Galilee.
