13 But the man who was healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had slipped away while the crowd was there.

John 5:13 Meaning and Commentary

John 5:13

And he that was healed, wist not who he was
He had never seen, and perhaps had never heard of Christ before, and so knew him not; and besides, Christ gave him no opportunity of conversing with him, or so much as to ask him who he was:

for Jesus had conveyed himself away;
had slipped away, as soon as ever he had wrought the miracle:

a multitude being in [that] place;
or "from the multitude that were in [that] place"; not that he hid himself among them, and there remained undiscovered; but he passed through them, and went his way to the temple, where he found the man he had healed, as in the following verse.

John 5:13 In-Context

11 But he answered, “The man who made me well told me, ‘Pick up your mat and walk.’”
12 “Who is this man who told you to pick it up and walk?” they asked.
13 But the man who was healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had slipped away while the crowd was there.
14 Afterward, Jesus found the man at the temple and said to him, “See, you have been made well. Stop sinning, or something worse may happen to you.”
15 And the man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well.
