And he said unto them
The Ethiopic version reads, "to the Pharisees"; and so it appears, that it was to them he spoke, from ( Matthew 22:41 ) how say they?
The Syriac version reads, "how say the Scribes?" as in ( Mark 12:35 ) and the Persic version, how say the wise men, the doctors in Israel, that Christ is David's son?
that which nothing was more common among the Jews.

39 Some of the scribes answered, “Teacher, You have spoken well!”
40 And they did not dare to question Him any further.
41 Then Jesus declared, “How can it be said that the Christ is the Son of David?
42 For David himself says in the book of Psalms: ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand
43 until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.”’
