Psalm 69:2

Listen to Psalm 69:2
2 I am sinking down in the mud, and there is no foothold; I have come into deep water; the flood is sweeping over me.

Psalm 69:2 Meaning and Commentary

Psalms 69:2

I sink in deep mire, where [there is] no standing
Which signifies not despair of mind, but difficult and distressed circumstances; the Messiah now bearing the filthy sins of his people, and the punishment of them, and so was got into the horrible pit, the mire and clay; (See Gill on Psalms 40:2);

I am come into deep waters, where the floods overflow me:
as afflictions are often compared to waters in Scripture, Christ's sorrows and sufferings are very aptly signified by deep waters and overflowing floods; and therefore rightly called a baptism, as by himself, ( Luke 12:50 ) , when he was as one immersed in and overwhelmed with water.

Psalm 69:2 In-Context

1 For the leader. Set to "Lilies." By David: Save me, God! For the water threatens my life.
2 I am sinking down in the mud, and there is no foothold; I have come into deep water; the flood is sweeping over me.
3 I am exhausted from crying, my throat is dry and sore, my eyes are worn out with looking for my God.
4 Those who hate me for no reason outnumber the hairs on my head. My persecutors are powerful, my enemies accuse me falsely. Am I expected to return things I didn't steal?
5 God, you know how foolish I am; my guilt is not hidden from you.
