Tiberias
Tiberias, mentioned only here in the NT, is on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee. During the time of Jesus, Herod Antipas made it the capital of Galilee, replacing Sepphoris. Herod Antipas unwittingly built Tiberias on an old Jewish cemetery. For that reason, many Jews avoided Tiberias for fear of ritual defilement.
