All the cities of the Levites within the possession of the children of Israel were forty and eight cities with their suburbs.

- At the last census, the tribe of Levi amounted only to Joshua 21:23 Joshua 21:000 ; ( Numbers 36:62 );and it is thought by some that forty-eight cities
- was too great a proportion for this tribe. But it should be considered, that cities in ancient times were little more than villages.
