42 耶 和 華 吩 咐 我 說 ： 你 對 他 們 說 ： 不 要 上 去 ， 也 不 要 爭 戰 ； 因 我 不 在 你 們 中 間 ， 恐 怕 你 們 被 仇 敵 殺 敗 了 。

Deuteronomy 1:42

And the Lord said unto me
When the people had armed themselves, and were in motion, or ready to set forward to ascend the hill:

say unto them, go not up, neither fight;
neither go up the hill, and if they did, contrary to this order, and should meet with enemies, not fight them, but retreat:

for I am not among you:
the ark of the covenant, the symbol of his presence, was then among them, but it did not go with them, it continued in the camp, ( Numbers 14:44 ) nor did the Lord exert his power, or show himself present with them, or to be on their side, but left them to themselves, and to their enemies:

lest ye be smitten before your enemies;
God not being with them to fight for them, protect and defend them, and give them victory.

40 至 於 你 們 ， 要 轉 回 ， 從 紅 海 的 路 往 曠 野 去 。

41 那 時 ， 你 們 回 答 我 說 ： 我 們 得 罪 了 耶 和 華 ， 情 願 照 耶 和 華 ─ 我 們 　 神 一 切 所 吩 咐 的 上 去 爭 戰 。 於 是 你 們 各 人 帶 著 兵 器 ， 爭 先 上 山 地 去 了 。

42 耶 和 華 吩 咐 我 說 ： 你 對 他 們 說 ： 不 要 上 去 ， 也 不 要 爭 戰 ； 因 我 不 在 你 們 中 間 ， 恐 怕 你 們 被 仇 敵 殺 敗 了 。

43 我 就 告 訴 了 你 們 ， 你 們 卻 不 聽 從 ， 竟 違 背 耶 和 華 的 命 令 ， 擅 自 上 山 地 去 了 。

44 住 那 山 地 的 亞 摩 利 人 就 出 來 攻 擊 你 們 ， 追 趕 你 們 ， 如 蜂 擁 一 般 ， 在 西 珥 殺 退 你 們 ， 直 到 何 珥 瑪 。
