耶利米书 38

1 玛 坦 的 儿 子 示 法 提 雅 、 巴 施 户 珥 的 儿 子 基 大 利 、 示 利 米 雅 的 儿 子 犹 甲 、 玛 基 雅 的 儿 子 巴 示 户 珥 听 见 耶 利 米 对 众 人 所 说 的 话 ， 说 ：

2 耶 和 华 如 此 说 ： 住 在 这 城 里 的 必 遭 刀 剑 、 饥 荒 、 瘟 疫 而 死 ； 但 出 去 归 降 迦 勒 底 人 的 必 得 存 活 ， 就 是 以 自 己 命 为 掠 物 的 ， 必 得 存 活 。

3 耶 和 华 如 此 说 ： 这 城 必 要 交 在 巴 比 伦 王 军 队 的 手 中 ， 他 必 攻 取 这 城 。

4 於 是 首 领 对 王 说 ： 求 你 将 这 人 治 死 ； 因 他 向 城 里 剩 下 的 兵 丁 和 众 民 说 这 样 的 话 ， 使 他 们 的 手 发 软 。 这 人 不 是 求 这 百 姓 得 平 安 ， 乃 是 叫 他 们 受 灾 祸 。

5 西 底 家 王 说 ： 他 在 你 们 手 中 ， 无 论 何 事 ， 王 也 不 能 与 你 们 反 对 。

6 他 们 就 拿 住 耶 利 米 ， 下 在 哈 米 勒 的 儿 子 （ 或 译 ： 王 的 儿 子 ） 玛 基 雅 的 牢 狱 里 ； 那 牢 狱 在 护 卫 兵 的 院 中 。 他 们 用 绳 子 将 耶 利 米 系 下 去 。 牢 狱 里 没 有 水 ， 只 有 淤 泥 ， 耶 利 米 就 陷 在 淤 泥 中 。

7 在 王 宫 的 太 监 古 实 人 以 伯 ． 米 勒 ， 听 见 他 们 将 耶 利 米 下 了 牢 狱 （ 那 时 王 坐 在 便 雅 悯 门 口 ） ，

8 以 伯 ． 米 勒 就 从 王 宫 里 出 来 ， 对 王 说 ：

9 主 ─ 我 的 王 啊 ， 这 些 人 向 先 知 耶 利 米 一 味 地 行 恶 ， 将 他 下 在 牢 狱 中 ； 他 在 那 里 必 因 饥 饿 而 死 ， 因 为 城 中 再 没 有 粮 食 。

10 王 就 吩 咐 古 实 人 以 伯 ． 米 勒 说 ： 你 从 这 里 带 领 三 十 人 ， 趁 着 先 知 耶 利 米 未 死 以 前 ， 将 他 从 牢 狱 中 提 上 来 。

11 於 是 以 伯 ． 米 勒 带 领 这 些 人 同 去 ， 进 入 王 宫 ， 到 库 房 以 下 ， 从 那 里 取 了 些 碎 布 和 破 烂 的 衣 服 ， 用 绳 子 缒 下 牢 狱 去 到 耶 利 米 那 里 。

12 古 实 人 以 伯 ． 米 勒 对 耶 利 米 说 ： 你 用 这 些 碎 布 和 破 烂 的 衣 服 放 在 绳 子 上 ， 垫 你 的 胳 肢 窝 。 耶 利 米 就 照 样 行 了 。

13 这 样 ， 他 们 用 绳 子 将 耶 利 米 从 牢 狱 里 拉 上 来 。 耶 利 米 仍 在 护 卫 兵 的 院 中 。

14 西 底 家 王 打 发 人 带 领 先 知 耶 利 米 ， 进 耶 和 华 殿 中 第 三 门 里 见 王 。 王 就 对 耶 利 米 说 ： 我 要 问 你 一 件 事 ， 你 丝 毫 不 可 向 我 隐 瞒 。

15 耶 利 米 对 西 底 家 说 ： 我 若 告 诉 你 ， 你 岂 不 定 要 杀 我 麽 ？ 我 若 劝 戒 你 ， 你 必 不 听 从 我 。

16 西 底 家 王 就 私 下 向 耶 利 米 说 ： 我 指 着 那 造 我 们 生 命 之 永 生 的 耶 和 华 起 誓 ： 我 必 不 杀 你 ， 也 不 将 你 交 在 寻 索 你 命 的 人 手 中 。

17 耶 利 米 对 西 底 家 说 ： 耶 和 华 ─ 万 军 之 　 神 、 以 色 列 的 　 神 如 此 说 ： 你 若 出 去 归 降 巴 比 伦 王 的 首 领 ， 你 的 命 就 必 存 活 ， 这 城 也 不 致 被 火 焚 烧 ， 你 和 你 的 全 家 都 必 存 活 。

18 你 若 不 出 去 归 降 巴 比 伦 王 的 首 领 ， 这 城 必 交 在 迦 勒 底 人 手 中 。 他 们 必 用 火 焚 烧 ， 你 也 不 得 脱 离 他 们 的 手 。

19 西 底 家 王 对 耶 利 米 说 ： 我 怕 那 些 投 降 迦 勒 底 人 的 犹 大 人 ， 恐 怕 迦 勒 底 人 将 我 交 在 他 们 手 中 ， 他 们 戏 弄 我 。

20 耶 利 米 说 ： 迦 勒 底 人 必 不 将 你 交 出 。 求 你 听 从 我 对 你 所 说 耶 和 华 的 话 ， 这 样 你 必 得 好 处 ， 你 的 命 也 必 存 活 。 耶 利 米 说 ： 迦 勒 底 人 必 不 将 你 交 出 。 求 你 听 从 我 对 你 所 说 耶 和 华 的 话 ， 这 样 你 必 得 好 处 ， 你 的 命 也 必 存 活 。

21 你 若 不 肯 出 去 ， 耶 和 华 指 示 我 的 话 乃 是 这 样 ：

22 犹 大 王 宫 里 所 剩 的 妇 女 必 都 带 到 巴 比 伦 王 的 首 领 那 里 。 这 些 妇 女 必 说 ： 你 知 己 的 朋 友 催 逼 你 ， 胜 过 你 ； 见 你 的 脚 陷 入 淤 泥 中 ， 就 转 身 退 後 了 。

23 人 必 将 你 的 后 妃 和 你 的 儿 女 带 到 迦 勒 底 人 那 里 ； 你 也 不 得 脱 离 他 们 的 手 ， 必 被 巴 比 伦 王 的 手 捉 住 ； 你 也 必 使 这 城 被 火 焚 烧 。

24 西 底 家 对 耶 利 米 说 ： 不 要 使 人 知 道 这 些 话 ， 你 就 不 至 於 死 。

25 首 领 若 听 见 了 我 与 你 说 话 ， 就 来 见 你 ， 问 你 说 ： 你 对 王 说 甚 麽 话 不 要 向 我 们 隐 瞒 ， 我 们 就 不 杀 你 。 王 向 你 说 甚 麽 话 也 要 告 诉 我 们 。

26 你 就 对 他 们 说 ： 我 在 王 面 前 恳 求 不 要 叫 我 回 到 约 拿 单 的 房 屋 死 在 那 里 。

27 随 後 众 首 领 来 见 耶 利 米 ， 问 他 ， 他 就 照 王 所 吩 咐 的 一 切 话 回 答 他 们 。 他 们 不 再 与 他 说 话 ， 因 为 事 情 没 有 ? 漏 。

28 於 是 耶 利 米 仍 在 护 卫 兵 的 院 中 ， 直 到 耶 路 撒 冷 被 攻 取 的 日 子 。

耶利米书 38 Commentary

Chapter 38

Jeremiah is cast into a dungeon, from whence he is delivered by an Ethiopian. (1-13) He advises the king to surrender to the Chaldeans. (14-28)

Verses 1-13 Jeremiah went on in his plain preaching. The princes went on in their malice. It is common for wicked people to look upon God's faithful ministers as enemies, because they show what enemies the wicked are to themselves while impenitent. Jeremiah was put into a dungeon. Many of God's faithful witnesses have been privately made away in prisons. Ebed-melech was an Ethiopian; yet he spoke to the king faithfully, These men have done ill in all they have done to Jeremiah. See how God can raise up friends for his people in distress. Orders were given for the prophet's release, and Ebed-melech saw him drawn up. Let this encourage us to appear boldly for God. Special notice is taken of his tenderness for Jeremiah. What do we behold in the different characters then, but the same we behold in the different characters now, that the Lord's children are conformed to his example, and the children of Satan to their master?

Verses 14-28 Jeremiah was not forward to repeat the warnings, which seemed only to endanger his own life, and to add to the king's guilt, but asked whether he feared to do the will of God. The less men fear God, the more they fear men; often they dare not act according to their own judgments and consciences.

Chapter Summary

INTRODUCTION TO JEREMIAH 38

This chapter is taken up in giving an account of Jeremiah's being cast into a dungeon; his deliverance from it; and private conversation with King Zedekiah. The occasion of the prophet's being cast into a dungeon was his discourse to the people, which four of the princes represented to the king as seditious, and moved to have him put to death; and, being delivered into their hands, was put into a miry dungeon, Jer 38:1-6. Ebedmelech, the Ethiopian, hearing of his miserable case, represented it to the king, and interceded for his release; which being granted, with the help of thirty men, and by means of old clouts and rotten rags, let down by cords, drew him up, and placed him in the court of the prison, Jer 38:7-13. King Zedekiah sends for Jeremiah, and has a private conference with him about the state of affairs; when the prophet faithfully told him how things would issue, and gave him his best advice, Jer 38:14-23; upon parting, the king desires the conference might be kept a secret from the princes, which was accordingly done, Jer 38:24-27; and Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison till the taking of Jerusalem, Jer 38:28.
