Finding Strength in God’s Love Each Day
Evening Scripture
1 Thessalonians, Chapter 3
So when we could stand it no longer, we thought it best to be left by ourselves in Athens. We sent Timothy, who is our brother and co-worker in God’s service in spreading the gospel of Christ, to strengthen and encourage you in your faith, so that no one would be unsettled by these trials.
For you know quite well that we are destined for them. In fact, when we were with you, we kept telling you that we would be persecuted. And it turned out that way, as you well know. For this reason, when I could stand it no longer, I sent to find out about your faith. I was afraid that in some way the tempter had tempted you and that our labors might have been in vain.
But Timothy has just now come to us from you and has brought good news about your faith and love. He has told us that you always have pleasant memories of us and that you long to see us, just as we also long to see you. Therefore, brothers and sisters, in all our distress and persecution we were encouraged about you because of your faith. For now we really live, since you are standing firm in the Lord.
How can we thank God enough for you in return for all the joy we have in the presence of our God because of you? Night and day we pray most earnestly that we may see you again and supply what is lacking in your faith. Now may our God and Father himself and our Lord Jesus clear the way for us to come to you.
May the Lord make your love increase and overflow for each other and for everyone else, just as ours does for you. May he strengthen your hearts so that you will be blameless and holy in the presence of our God and Father when our Lord Jesus comes with all his holy ones.
Evening Reflection
It was one of those days. The kind where, from sunrise to sunset, nothing seemed to be going my way. Even the dog seemed to have an attitude when I asked if he wanted dinner. By 9 p.m., I was exhausted, discouraged, and stretched thin. As I crawled into bed, small tears pooled down the sides of my face. I was helpless, weak, and weary. Can you relate?
As humans, we tend to try to fix things that go wrong. It’s what many Type-A people, including myself, like to do! But when we do this, we often try to find strength within ourselves. Our power. Our solutions. The reality is that our strength has limits. We’re finite human beings with limited time, energy, and capacity. But many of us try to live as if we’re God.
It’s a difficult question for even me to answer, but when you think about your life, where do you need strength? What challenges, responsibilities, or emotions have been draining your energy? Now the most painful one: Where are you looking for your strength?
In 1 Thessalonians 3, Paul reminds Timothy that self-reliance will always leave us empty handed, but God-reliance provides powerful results. Will we still face troubles? Absolutely. But it’s not our power sustaining us, it’s Christ’s. And other people have the ability to see this same kind of faith in you if you faithfully live it out.
Today, I don’t know where you turn for strength when you feel weak. Maybe it’s a friend, family member, counselor, or pillow. And none of these are bad. But might I gently remind you to turn to God first, and then the resources He’s given you here on earth? Then, remind your soul where God’s love has sustained you in the past through difficult seasons and exciting ones. What would it look like to depend on Him more fully tomorrow?
This passage reminds us that God’s love strengthens us and helps us remain steadfast in our faith. The good news about this strength is that it’s always just enough for each day. Why? Because we were never meant to carry life's burdens alone. As we learn to trust Christ more, our spiritual strength grows, and we become more connected to Him, the root source. God's love is present with us in both joyful and difficult seasons.
As you prepare for rest, ask yourself:
- Where did I see God's love at work in my life today?
- What burdens do I need to release to Him tonight?
- How can I rely on His strength rather than my own tomorrow?
Evening Prayer
Dear Jesus,
Tonight, I want to thank you for being my ultimate source of strength. When I try to take matters into my own hands or be strong enough, remind me I don’t need to be. Forgive me and help me look to you alone. I bring all of my weariness and burdens to you, trusting that your love will sustain me through every challenge this life throws at me. I will rest knowing that you’re working in my life, for good, and you love caring for me. I will find strength in your love alone.
Amen.
Agape, Amber
