1 Es war aber ein Gewisser krank, Lazarus von Bethanien, aus dem Dorfe der Maria und ihrer Schwester Martha.

John 11:1

Now a certain man was sick
Very likely of a fever; Nonnus calls it a morbid fire, a hot and burning disease:

[named] Lazarus of Bethany;
for his name, which the Ethiopic version reads "Eleazar", and the Persic version "Gazarus", (See Gill on Luke 16:24); and for the place Bethany, (See Gill on Matthew 21:1), (See Gill on Matthew 21:17).

where they were both born, as well as Lazarus, or at least where they dwelt; of the former, some account is, given in the next verse, and of the latter, (See Gill on Luke 10:38).

1 Es war aber ein Gewisser krank, Lazarus von Bethanien, aus dem Dorfe der Maria und ihrer Schwester Martha.

2 (Maria aber war es, die den Herrn mit Salbe salbte und seine Füße mit ihren Haaren abtrocknete; deren Bruder Lazarus war krank.)

3 Da sandten die Schwestern zu ihm und ließen ihm sagen: Herr, siehe, der, den du lieb hast, ist krank.

4 Als aber Jesus es hörte, sprach er: Diese Krankheit ist nicht zum Tode, sondern um der Herrlichkeit Gottes willen, auf daß der Sohn Gottes durch sie verherrlicht werde.

5 Jesus aber liebte die Martha und ihre Schwester und den Lazarus.
