Matthew 14:22-33

Listen to Matthew 14:22-33

Jesus Walks on the Water

22 1Immediately he 2made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds.
23 And after he had dismissed the crowds, 3he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When 4evening came, he was there alone,
24 but the boat by this time was a long way[a] from the land, [b] beaten by the waves, for the wind was against them.
25 And 5in the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea.
26 But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, 6they were terrified, and said, “It is a ghost! ” and they cried out in fear.
27 But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, 7“Take heart; it is I. 8Do not be afraid. ”
28 And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water. ”
29 He said, “Come. ”So Peter got out of the boat and 9walked on the water and came to Jesus.
30 But when he saw the wind, [c] he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, 10“Lord, save me. ”
31 Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, 11“O you of little faith, why did you 12doubt? ”
32 And when they got into the boat, 13the wind ceased.
33 And 14those in the boat 15worshiped him, saying, 16“Truly you are 17the Son of God. ”

Following that miraculous experience, the disciples found themselves in a fierce storm and fearing for their lives, but Jesus showed up at the perfect time and not only calmed the sea but provided peace to all who were on the boat. Let’s learn more about this story and the real-life meaning there is for us from today’s message, Calm at the Center.

Let’s face it, many of us are consumed by fear today!  We look at all that’s going on in our world, and it’s very easy for us to resort to that sort of thing.  But in case you haven’t noticed when we capitulate to fear it destroys faith.  That’s why we need to choose faith over fear!  And God will give us the faith we need to overcome that fear. Today on Light on the Hill we’ll learn how to embrace faith over fear as we join pastor James Kaddis in Matthew chapter fourteen.
