Psalms 107:10-43

1Some sat in darkness and in 2the shadow of death, prisoners in 3affliction and in irons,
for they 4had rebelled against the words of God, and 5spurned the counsel of the Most High.
So he bowed their hearts down with hard labor; they fell down, 6with none to help.
7Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress.
He brought them out of 8darkness and the shadow of death, and 9burst their bonds apart.
10Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man!
For he 11shatters the doors of bronze and cuts in two the bars of iron.
Some were 12fools through their sinful ways, and because of their iniquities suffered affliction;
13they loathed any kind of food, and they 14drew near to 15the gates of death.
16Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress.
He 17sent out his word and 18healed them, and 19delivered them from their destruction.
20Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man!
And let them 21offer sacrifices of thanksgiving, and 22tell of his deeds in 23songs of joy!
Some 24went down to the sea in ships, doing business on the great waters;
they saw the deeds of the LORD, his wondrous works in the deep.
For he 25commanded and 26raised the stormy wind, which lifted up the waves of the sea.
They mounted up to heaven; they went down to the depths; their courage 27melted away in their evil plight;
they reeled and 28staggered like drunken men and 29were at their wits' end.[a]
30Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress.
He 31made the storm be still, and the waves of the sea were hushed.
Then they were glad that the waters[b] were quiet, and he brought them to their desired haven.
32Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man!
Let them 33extol him in 34the congregation of the people, and praise him in the assembly of the elders.
He 35turns rivers into a desert, springs of water into thirsty ground,
36a fruitful land into a salty waste, because of the evil of its inhabitants.
He 37turns a desert into pools of water, 38a parched land into springs of water.
And there he lets the hungry dwell, and they establish 39a city to live in;
they sow fields and plant vineyards and get a fruitful yield.
40By his blessing they multiply greatly, and he does not let their livestock diminish.
When they are diminished and brought low through oppression, evil, and sorrow,
41he pours contempt on princes and 42makes them wander 43in trackless wastes;
but 44he raises up the needy out of affliction and 45makes their families like flocks.
46The upright see it and are glad, and 47all wickedness shuts its mouth.
48Whoever is wise, let him attend to these things; let them consider the steadfast love of the LORD.

Psalms 107:10-43 Meaning and Commentary

INTRODUCTION TO PSALM 107

This psalm, from its style, and from its connection with the preceding psalms, seems to have been written by David. The two foregoing psalms respect the children of Israel; this is generally thought to concern all mankind, and its view to assert a general providence which attends all, in whatsoever condition and circumstance; and to encourage men in their distresses to cry unto the Lord. According to Kimchi, Aben Ezra, and others, four sorts of persons are mentioned, travellers through a wilderness, prisoners, sick persons, and such who use the seas; to which some add a fifth, husbandmen; these are instanced in, not to the exclusion of others, but from them it may be concluded that whatsoever state or condition persons may be in, they are known and taken notice of by the Lord, and are relieved by him when they call upon him. Some restrain the whole to the Israelites, as the Targum, R. Obadiah, Arama, and others, where they make any application; and others apply the psalm to New Testament times; and indeed, though the literal sense should be attended unto and preserved, yet it seems to be applicable to spiritual persons and things. The title of it in the Syriac version is pretty remarkable,

``it is said concerning Joab and Abiah the sons of Samuel, who recited the commandments of the Lord. God gathered the Jews out of captivity, and brought them out from Babylon. Also the only begotten Son of God, Jesus Christ, gathered the Gentiles from the four corners of the world, by preaching to baptism.''
