12 Il re sappia che i Giudei, che son venuti d’appresso a te a noi, son giunti in Gerusalemme; e che riedificano quella città ribella e malvagia; e rifanno interamente le mura, ed hanno già racconci i fondamenti.

Ezra 4:12

Be it known unto the king
The intent of this letter was, that it might be known to the king what follows:

that the Jews which came up from thee to us are come unto Jerusalem;
this they observe partly out of contempt of the Jews, having been lately captive in Babylon, and partly to insinuate what ingratitude they were guilty of; that having got their liberty, and come to Jerusalem, they made use of it to the king's detriment:

building the rebellious and the bad city;
as they suggest it had been to kings, even his predecessors, in former times, ( Ezra 4:15 )

and have set up the walls thereof, and joined the foundations;
which was a falsehood; for the most they had done was setting up the walls of their houses in Jerusalem, and laying the foundation of the temple; as for the walls of the city, they had not as yet done anything unto them.

10 e gli altri popoli, che il grande e glorioso Osnappar avea tramutati di stanza, e fatti abitar nella città di Samaria, e gli altri di di là dal fiume, ecc. scrissero al re Artaserse.

11 Questo è il tenor della lettera che gli mandarono. Al re Artaserse: i tuoi servitori, gli uomini di qua dal fiume, ecc.

12 Il re sappia che i Giudei, che son venuti d’appresso a te a noi, son giunti in Gerusalemme; e che riedificano quella città ribella e malvagia; e rifanno interamente le mura, ed hanno già racconci i fondamenti.

13 Ora sappia il re, che se questa città è riedificata, e se le sue mura son rifatte, essi non pagheranno più tributo, nè taglia, nè gabella; e così quella città recherà danno alle entrate reali.

14 Ora, conciossiachè noi siamo salariati dal palazzo, e non sia cosa conveniente a noi il vedere che il re sia schernito, perciò abbiamo mandato a fare assapere la cosa al re.
