John 12:33

This he said
These are the words of the evangelist, interpreting the design of Christ in the above words, thereby

signifying what death he should die;
the phrase of being lifted up from the earth, not only signified his death, but the kind, or manner of it, that it should be by crucifixion; a person crucified being stretched forth upon a cross, and that erected, was lifted up between earth and heaven.

34 La moltitudine gli rispose: Noi abbiamo inteso dalla legge che il Cristo dimora in eterno; come dunque dici tu che convien che il Figliuol dell’uomo sia elevato ad alto? chi è questo Figliuol dell’uomo?

35 Gesù adunque disse loro: Ancora un poco di tempo la Luce è con voi; camminate, mentre avete la luce, che le tenebre non vi colgano; perciocchè, chi cammina nelle tenebre non sa dove si vada.
