2 Chronicles 17:13 Meaning and Commentary

2 Chronicles 17:13

And he had much business in the cities of Judah
Partly in fortifying them, and partly in reforming the inhabitants of them:

and the men of war, mighty men of valour, were in Jerusalem;
or by or near unto it, so the particle is rendered, ( Joshua 5:13 ) , they encamped in places adjacent to it; for such a number of men as follows, even 1,160,000, could never be contained in Jerusalem, but must be disposed of in the territories of it; nor did they wait on the king together; but in course, see ( 2 Chronicles 17:19 ) , by which it appears there is no need to suppose any mistake of the transcriber, in any or all of the following sums, as has been suggested F17.

2 Chronicles 17:13 In-Context

11 Some of the Philistines brought Jehoshaphat a large amount of silver and other gifts, and some Arabs brought him 7,700 sheep and 7,700 goats.
12 So Jehoshaphat continued to grow more and more powerful. Throughout Judah he built fortifications and cities,
13 where supplies were stored in huge amounts. In Jerusalem he stationed outstanding officers,
14 according to their clans. Adnah was the commander of the troops from the clans of Judah, and he had 300,000 soldiers under him.
15 Second in rank was Jehohanan, with 280,000 soldiers,
