1 Chronicles 24:3

And David distributed them
The posterities of Eleazar and Ithamar into certain classes or courses:

both Zadok of the sons of Eleazar, and Ahimelech of the sons of
Ithamar;
these were the two principal men of the respective families, the one was high priest, and the other "sagan" or deputy; or they both officiated as high priests alternately, until the one was removed in Solomon's time, and the other established alone. And now their brethren the priests, who were under each of these, are the persons David divided into classes:

according to their offices in their service:
to perform their office as priests in the service of the temple in their turns.

1 También los hijos de Aarón tuvieron sus repartimientos. Los hijos de Aarón: Nadab, Abiú, Eleazar e Itamar

2 Mas Nadab, y Abiú murieron antes que su padre, y no tuvieron hijos; Eleazar e Itamar tuvieron el sacerdocio

3 Y David los repartió, siendo Sadoc de los hijos de Eleazar, y Ahimelec de los hijos de Itamar, por sus turnos en su ministerio

4 Y los hijos de Eleazar fueron hallados más, cuando fueron contados, que los hijos de Itamar; y los repartieron así: De los hijos de Eleazar había dieciséis cabezas de casas paternas; y de los hijos de Itamar por las casas de sus padres, ocho

5 Los repartieron, pues, por suerte los unos con los otros; porque de los hijos de Eleazar y de los hijos de Itamar hubo príncipes del santuario, y príncipes de Dios
