1 Y dijo David: Esta será la Casa del SEÑOR Dios, y éste será el altar del holocausto para Israel

2 Después mandó David que se juntaran los extranjeros que estaban en la tierra de Israel, e hizo de ellos canteros, que labraran piedras para edificar la Casa de Dios

3 Asimismo aparejó David mucho hierro para la clavazón de las puertas, y para las junturas; y mucho bronce sin peso, y madera de cedro sin cuenta

4 Porque los sidonios y tirios habían traído a David madera de cedro innumerable

5 Y dijo David: Salomón mi hijo es aún muchacho y tierno, y la Casa que se ha de edificar al SEÑOR ha de ser magnífica por excelencia, para nombre y honra en todas las tierras; ahora pues yo le aparejaré lo necesario. Y preparó David antes de su muerte en gran abundancia

6 Llamó entonces David a Salomón su hijo, y le mandó que edificara Casa al SEÑOR Dios de Israel

7 Y dijo David a Salomón: Hijo mío, en mi corazón tuve el edificar templo al nombre del SEÑOR mi Dios

8 Mas vino a mí palabra del SEÑOR, diciendo: Tú has derramado mucha sangre, y has traído grandes guerras; no edificarás casa a mi nombre, porque has derramado mucha sangre en la tierra delante de mí

9 He aquí, un hijo te nacerá, el cual será varón de reposo, porque yo le daré quietud de todos sus enemigos en derredor; por tanto su nombre será Salomón; y yo daré paz y reposo sobre Israel en sus días

10 El edificará Casa a mi nombre, y él me será a mí por hijo, y yo le seré por padre; y afirmaré el trono de su reino sobre Israel para siempre

11 Ahora pues, hijo mío, sea contigo el SEÑOR, y seas prosperado, y edifiques Casa al SEÑOR tu Dios, como él ha dicho de ti

12 Y el SEÑOR te dé entendimiento y prudencia, y él te dé mandamientos para Israel; y que tú guardes la ley del SEÑOR tu Dios

13 Entonces serás prosperado, si guardares para hacer los estatutos y derechos que el SEÑOR mandó a Moisés sobre Israel. Esfuérzate pues, y cobra ánimo; no temas, ni desmayes

14 He aquí, yo en mi estrechez he preparado para la Casa del SEÑOR cien mil talentos de oro, y un millar de millares de talentos de plata; no tiene peso el bronce ni el hierro, porque es mucho. Asimismo he preparado madera y piedra, a lo cual tú añadirás

15 Tú tienes contigo muchos oficiales, canteros, albañiles, y carpinteros, y todo hombre experto en toda obra

16 Del oro, de la plata, del bronce, y del hierro, no hay número. Levántate pues, y a la obra; que el SEÑOR será contigo

17 Asimismo mandó David a todos los príncipes de Israel que dieran ayuda a Salomón su hijo, diciendo

18 ¿No es con vosotros el SEÑOR vuestro Dios, el cual os ha dado quietud de todas partes? Porque él ha entregado en mi mano los moradores de la tierra, y la tierra ha sido sujetada delante del SEÑOR, y delante de su pueblo

19 Poned, pues, ahora vuestros corazones y vuestras almas en buscar al SEÑOR vuestro Dios; y levantaos, y edificad el santuario del SEÑOR Dios, para traer el arca del pacto del SEÑOR, y los santos vasos de Dios, a la Casa edificada al nombre del SEÑOR

Chapter 22

David's preparations for the temple. (1-5) David's instructions to Solomon. (6-16) The prices commanded to assist. (17-19)

Verses 1-5 On occasion of the terrible judgment inflicted on Israel for the sin of David, God pointed out the place where he would have the temple built; upon which, David was excited to make preparations for the great work. David must not build, but he would do all he could; he prepared abundantly before his death. What our hands find to do for God, and our souls, and those round us, let us do it with all our might, before our death; for after death there is no device nor working. And when the Lord refuses to employ us in those services which we desired, we must not be discouraged or idle, but do what we can, though in a humbler sphere.

Verses 6-16 David gives Solomon the reason why he should build the temple. Because God named him. Nothing is more powerful to engage us in any service for God, than to know that we are appointed thereto. Because he would have leisure and opportunity to do it. He should have peace and quietness. Where God gives rest, he expects work. Because God had promised to establish his kingdom. God's gracious promises should quicken and strengthen our religious service. David delivered to Solomon an account of the vast preparations he had made for this building; not from pride and vain-glory, but to encourage Solomon to engage cheerfully in the great work. He must not think, by building the temple, to purchase a dispensation to sin; on the contrary, his doing that would not be accepted, if he did not take heed to fulfil the statutes of the Lord. In our spiritual work, as well as in our spiritual warfare, we have need of courage and resolution.

Verses 17-19 Whatever is done towards rendering the word of God generally known and attended to, is like bringing a stone, or an ingot of gold, towards erecting the temple. This should encourage us when we grieve that we do not see more fruit of our labours; much good may appear after our death, which we never thought of. Let us not then be weary of well doing. The work is in the hands of the Prince of peace. As he, the Author and Finisher of the work, is pleased to employ us as his instruments, let us arise and be doing, encouraging and helping one another; working by his rule, after his example, in dependence on his grace, assured that he will be with us, and that our labour shall not be in vain in the Lord.
