1 Pasados estos negocios, aconteció que Nabot de Jezreel tenía en Jezreel una viña junto al palacio de Acab rey de Samaria

2 Y Acab habló a Nabot, diciendo: Dame tu viña para un huerto de legumbres, porque está cercana, junto a mi casa, y yo te daré por ella otra viña mejor que ésta; o si mejor te pareciere, te pagaré su valor en dinero

3 Y Nabot respondió a Acab: Guárdeme el SEÑOR de que yo te dé a ti la heredad de mis padres

4 Y vino Acab a su casa triste y enojado, por la palabra que Nabot de Jezreel le había respondido, diciendo: No te daré la heredad de mis padres. Y se acostó en su cama, y volvió su rostro, y no comió pan

5 Y vino a él su mujer Jezabel, y le dijo: ¿Por qué está tan triste tu espíritu, y no comes pan

6 Y él respondió: Porque hablé con Nabot de Jezreel, y le dije que me diera su viña por dinero, o que, si más quería, le daría otra viña por ella; y él respondió: Yo no te daré mi viña

7 Y su mujer Jezabel le dijo: ¿Eres tú ahora rey sobre Israel? Levántate, y come pan, y alégrate; yo te daré la viña de Nabot de Jezreel

8 Entonces ella escribió cartas en nombre de Acab, y las selló con su anillo y las envió a los ancianos y a los principales que moraban en su ciudad con Nabot

9 Y las cartas que escribió decían así: Proclamad ayuno, y poned a Nabot a la cabecera del pueblo

10 y poned dos hombres, hijos de Belial, delante de él, que atestigüen contra él, y digan: Tú has blasfemado a Dios y al rey. Y entonces sacadlo, y apedreadlo, para que muera

11 Y los de su ciudad, los ancianos y los principales que moraban en su ciudad, lo hicieron como Jezabel les mandó, conforme a lo escrito en las cartas que ella les había enviado

12 Y promulgaron ayuno, y asentaron a Nabot a la cabecera del pueblo

13 Vinieron entonces los dos hombres, hijos de Belial, y se sentaron delante de él; aquellos hombres de Belial atestiguaron contra Nabot delante del pueblo, diciendo: Nabot ha blasfemado a Dios y al rey. Y lo sacaron fuera de la ciudad, y lo apedrearon con piedras, y murió

14 Después enviaron a decir a Jezabel: Nabot ha sido apedreado y ha muerto

15 Y cuando Jezabel oyó que Nabot había sido apedreado y muerto, dijo a Acab: Levántate y posee la viña de Nabot de Jezreel, que no te la quiso dar por dinero; porque Nabot no vive, sino que ha muerto

16 Y oyendo Acab que Nabot había muerto, se levantó para descender a la viña de Nabot de Jezreel, para tomar posesión de ella

17 Entonces vino palabra del SEÑOR a Elías tisbita, diciendo

18 Levántate, desciende a encontrarte con Acab rey de Israel, que está en Samaria; he aquí él está en la viña de Nabot, a la cual ha descendido para tomar posesión de ella

19 Y le hablarás, diciendo: Así dijo el SEÑOR: ¿No cometiste homicidio y también has despojado? Y tornarás a hablarle, diciendo: Así dijo el SEÑOR: En el mismo lugar donde lamieron los perros la sangre de Nabot, los perros lamerán también tu sangre, la tuya misma

20 Y Acab dijo a Elías: ¿Me has hallado, enemigo mío? Y él respondió: Te he encontrado, porque te has vendido a mal hacer delante del SEÑOR

21 he aquí yo traigo mal sobre ti, y quemaré tu posteridad, y talaré de Acab todo meante a la pared, al guardado y al quedado en Israel

22 Y yo pondré tu casa como la casa de Jeroboam hijo de Nabat, y como la casa de Baasa hijo de Ahías; por la provocación con que me provocaste a ira, y con que has hecho que Israel pecara

23 De Jezabel también ha hablado el SEÑOR, diciendo: Los perros comerán a Jezabel en la barbacana de Jezreel

24 El que de Acab fuere muerto en la ciudad, los perros le comerán; y el que fuere muerto en el campo, lo comerán las aves del cielo

25 (A la verdad ninguno fue como Acab, que se vendió para hacer lo malo delante de los ojos del SEÑOR; porque Jezabel su mujer lo incitaba

26 El fue en gran manera abominable, caminando en pos de los ídolos, conforme a todo lo que hicieron los amorreos, a los cuales lanzó el SEÑOR delante de los hijos de Israel)

27 Y acaeció cuando Acab oyó estas palabras, que rasgó sus vestidos, y puso cilicio sobre su carne, y ayunó, y durmió en cilicio, y anduvo humillado

28 Entonces vino palabra del SEÑOR a Elías, el tisbita, diciendo

29 ¿No has visto como Acab se ha humillado delante de mí? Pues por cuanto se ha humillado delante de mí, no traeré el mal en sus días; en los días de su hijo traeré el mal sobre su casa

Chapter 21

Ahab covets Naboth's vineyard. (1-4) Naboth murdered by Jezebel. (5-16) Elijah denounces judgments against Ahab. (17-29)

Verses 1-4 Naboth, perhaps, had been pleased that he had a vineyard situated so near the palace, but the situation proved fatal to him; many a man's possessions have been his snare, and his neighbourhood to greatness, of bad consequence. Discontent is a sin that is its own punishment, and makes men torment themselves. It is a sin that is its own parent; it arises not from the condition, but from the mind: as we find Paul contented in a prison, so Ahab was discontented in a palace. He had all the delights of Canaan, that pleasant land, at command; the wealth of a kingdom, the pleasures of a court, and the honours and powers of a throne; yet all avails him nothing without Naboth's vineyard. Wrong desires expose men to continual vexations, and those that are disposed to fret, however well off, may always find something or other to fret at.

Verses 5-16 When, instead of a help meet, a man has an agent for Satan, in the form of an artful, unprincipled, yet beloved wife, fatal effects may be expected. Never were more wicked orders given by any prince, than those Jezebel sent to the rulers of Jezreel. Naboth must be murdered under colour of religion. There is no wickedness so vile, so horrid, but religion has sometimes been made a cover for it. Also, it must be done under colour of justice, and with the formalities of legal process. Let us, from this sad story, be amazed at the wickedness of the wicked, and the power of Satan in the children of disobedience. Let us commit the keeping of our lives and comforts to God, for innocence will not always be our security; and let us rejoice in the knowledge that all will be set to rights in the great day.

Verses 17-29 Blessed Paul complains that he was sold under sin, Ro. 7:14 , as a poor captive against his will; but Ahab was willing, he sold himself to sin; of choice, and as his own act and deed, he loved the dominion of sin. Jezebel his wife stirred him up to do wickedly. Ahab is reproved, and his sin set before his eyes, by Elijah. That man's condition is very miserable, who has made the word of God his enemy; and very desperate, who reckons the ministers of that word his enemies, because they tell him the truth. Ahab put on the garb and guise of a penitent, yet his heart was unhumbled and unchanged. Ahab's repentance was only what might be seen of men; it was outward only. Let this encourage all that truly repent, and unfeignedly believe the holy gospel, that if a pretending partial penitent shall go to his house reprieved, doubtless, a sincere believing penitent shall go to his house justified.

INTRODUCTION TO 1 KINGS 21

In this chapter we have an account of Ahab's design to have Naboth's vineyard, for which he offered him another, or the value of that, but Naboth refusing to part with it, Ahab fell sick, 1Ki 21:1-4, the reason of which being found out by Jezebel, she devised means to get Naboth put to death under the colour of justice for blasphemy, 1Ki 21:5-14, and then bid Ahab go and take possession of the vineyard, where he was met by Elijah, who denounced the judgments of God upon him, and Jezebel, and all his family, for his injustice, 1Ki 21:15-26, but he humbling himself, the evil threatened was deferred to the days of his son, 1Ki 21:27-29.
