2 Crónicas 36

1 Entonces el pueblo de la tierra tomó a Joacaz hijo de Josías, y le hicieron rey en lugar de su padre en Jerusalén

2 De veintitrés años era Joacaz cuando comenzó a reinar, y tres meses reinó en Jerusalén

3 Y el rey de Egipto lo quitó de Jerusalén, y condenó la tierra en cien talentos de plata y uno de oro

4 Y constituyó el rey de Egipto a su hermano Eliacim por rey sobre Judá y Jerusalén, y le mudó el nombre en Joacim; y a Joacaz su hermano tomó Necao, y lo llevó a Egipto

5 Cuando comenzó a reinar Joacim era de veinticinco años, y reinó once años en Jerusalén: e hizo lo malo ante los ojos del SEÑOR su Dios

6 Y subió contra él Nabucodonosor rey de Babilonia, y atado con cadenas de bronce lo llevó a Babilonia

7 También llevó Nabucodonosor a Babilonia parte de los vasos de la Casa del SEÑOR, y los puso en su templo en Babilonia

8 Los demás hechos de Joacim, y las abominaciones que hizo, y lo que en él se halló, he aquí todo está escrito en el libro de los reyes de Israel y de Judá; y reinó en su lugar Joaquín su hijo

9 De ocho años era Joaquín cuando comenzó a reinar, y reinó tres meses y diez días en Jerusalén; e hizo lo malo ante los ojos del SEÑOR

10 A la vuelta del año el rey Nabucodonosor envió, y lo hizo llevar a Babilonia juntamente con los vasos preciosos de la Casa del SEÑOR; y constituyó a Sedequías su hermano por rey sobre Judá y Jerusalén

11 De veintiún años era Sedequías cuando comenzó a reinar, y once años reinó en Jerusalén

12 E hizo lo malo ante los ojos del SEÑOR su Dios, y no se humilló delante de Jeremías profeta, que le hablaba de la boca del SEÑOR

13 Se rebeló asimismo contra Nabucodonosor, al cual había jurado por Dios; y endureció su cerviz, y obstinó su corazón, para no volverse al SEÑOR Dios de Israel

14 Y también todos los príncipes de los sacerdotes, y el pueblo, aumentaron la rebelión, rebelándose conforme a todas las abominaciones de los gentiles, y contaminando la Casa del SEÑOR, la cual él había santificado en Jerusalén

15 Y el SEÑOR el Dios de sus padres envió a ellos por mano de sus mensajeros, levantándose de mañana y enviando; porque él tenía compasión de su pueblo, y de su habitación

16 Mas ellos hacían escarnio de los mensajeros de Dios, y menospreciaban sus palabras, burlándose de sus profetas, hasta que subió el furor del SEÑOR contra su pueblo, y no hubo ya remedio

17 Por lo cual trajo contra ellos al rey de los caldeos, que mató a espada a sus jóvenes en la Casa de su santuario, sin perdonar joven, ni doncella, ni viejo, ni decrépito; todos los entregó en sus manos

18 Asimismo todos los vasos de la Casa de Dios, grandes y chicos, los tesoros de la Casa del SEÑOR, y los tesoros del rey y de sus príncipes, todo lo llevó a Babilonia

19 Y quemaron la Casa de Dios, y rompieron el muro de Jerusalén, y consumieron al fuego todos sus palacios, y destruyeron todos sus vasos deseables

20 Los que quedaron de la espada, los pasaron a Babilonia; y fueron siervos de él y de sus hijos, hasta que vino el reino de los persas

21 para que se cumpliera la palabra del SEÑOR por la boca de Jeremías, hasta que la tierra cumpliera sus sábados; porque todo el tiempo de su asolamiento reposó, hasta que los setenta años fueron cumplidos

22 Mas al primer año de Ciro rey de los persas, para que se cumpliera la palabra del SEÑOR por boca de Jeremías, el SEÑOR despertó el espíritu de Ciro rey de los persas, el cual hizo pasar pregón por todo su reino, y también por escrito, diciendo

23 Así dice Ciro rey de los persas: El SEÑOR Dios de los cielos, me ha dado todos los reinos de la tierra; y él me ha encargado que le edifique Casa en Jerusalén, que es en Judá. ¿Quién de vosotros hay de todo su pueblo? El SEÑOR su Dios sea con él, y suba

Chapter 36

The destruction of Jerusalem. (1-21) The proclamation of Cyrus. (22,23)

Verses 1-21 The ruin of Judah and Jerusalem came on by degrees. The methods God takes to call back sinners by his word, by ministers, by conscience, by providences, are all instances of his compassion toward them, and his unwillingness that any should perish. See here what woful havoc sin makes, and, as we value the comfort and continuance of our earthly blessings, let us keep that worm from the root of them. They had many times ploughed and sowed their land in the seventh year, when it should have rested, and now it lay unploughed and unsown for ten times seven years. God will be no loser in his glory at last, by the disobedience of men. If they refused to let the land rest, God would make it rest. What place, O God, shall thy justice spare, if Jerusalem has perished? If that delight of thine were cut off for wickedness, let us not be high-minded, but fear.

Verses 22-23 God had promised the restoring of the captives, and the rebuilding of Jerusalem, at the end of seventy years; and that time to favour Zion, that set time, came at last. Though God's church be cast down, it is not cast off; though his people be corrected, they are not abandoned; though thrown into the furnace, they are not lost there, nor left there any longer than till the dross be separated. Though God contend long, he will not contend always. Before we close the books of the Chronicles, which contain a faithful register of events, think what desolation sin introduced into the world, nay, even into the church of God. Let us tremble at what is here recorded, while in the character of some few gracious souls, we discover that the Lord left not himself without witness. And when we have looked at this faithful portrait of man by nature, let us contrast with it that same nature, when recovered by Almighty grace, through the justifying and soul-adorning righteousness of Christ our Saviour.

This chapter records the reigns of the four kings of Judah, and the captivity of the Jews, the short reign of Jehoahaz, deposed by the king of Egypt, and his brother Eliakim or Jehoiakim set up in his room, 2Ch 36:1-4, the reign of Jehoiakim, who was bound and carried away by Nebuchadnezzar, 2Ch 36:5-8, the reign of Jehoiachin his son, who also in a short time was taken and carried to Babylon by the same king, 2Ch 36:9,10, the reign of Zedekiah, who also rebelled against the king of Babylon, and he and his people were taken and carried captive by him for his sins, which are here mentioned, according to the prophecy of Jeremiah, and where the Jews continued until the reign of the kingdom of Persia, 2Ch 36:11-21 and the chapter is concluded with the proclamation of Cyrus king of Persia, and with which also the next book begins, 2Ch 36:22,23.
